I thought of a brilliant (imho) domain last night (tech related) and checked on a major Domain selling site to see whether it was available and it was.

Within a few seconds, before I could buy it, it popped up with a message saying "sorry this domain is no longer available".

I checked who.is and it seems it was registered that same day! Its hard to figure out an exact time as the time given in Zulu hadn't even happened yet.

Am I being paranoid here and is it just a coincidence?

On the same topic, are you ever worried, when coming up with a great domain name (say voice.com) that by checking its availability you are alerting the website owners to your idea?

Maybe try checking whois before checking on any (other) major domain selling site...? (That's pretty much what I do roughly 75% of the time when I'm not sure if a name I'm interested in has already been registered.)

Personally, when checking whois first, either it's registered or it isn't (assuming it's an extension that is checkable)--I am not worried that checking availability in this way will alert anyone to anything. Granted, it's possible, but I haven't yet run into a situation where I checked an unregistered .com via whois (I use the command line version) and it was unavailable by the time I went to register it (which would be less than a minute after the search).

Good luck in the future with checking names.

I have also encountered this situation. It is possible that the network is not good when I query WHOIS
