Apture?

Is this a new monetization tool recently installed on NP? I notice when I highlight something a box from powered by apture.com pops up on my screen and wants to help me find more info about the words I've highlighted. At first I was freaking out because I thought some kind of spyware had made its way into my pc, then I realized it was coming from NP.

I find this not only very annoying but also I think it slows down the load time of the site.

Just giving my two cents, I don't own the forum and it's still free, so I can't do more than complain here. If I could vote, I say take Apture off NP..

I don't think it affects the loading time much because its a mere piece of javascript code.
Anyways the box only appears when you hover on the Learn More button.

So I think its fine and doesn't affect my reading experience much.

Add it to your HOSTS file and it will be gone. For more details see Google. Add the following entry at the end of the file 127.0.0.1 www.apture.com

In all fairness to NamePros, Apture seems pretty benign and doesn't seem to effect load time much at all. So it may be ok to leave it alone.

However, on a related topic, with all the 3rd party tracking stuff many sites are adding, such as Chartbeat, along with more obnoxious layered ads, is further pushing many people to using ad blockers.

I don't use one, but I have started adding sites to my HOSTS file. Never had to do that before. It's likely just a matter of time before I too join the millions using at least one or more ad blockers (though I'm on my way there, since I've long used Flashblock, block PDFs from auto-opening, along with some other measures). Sites are bringing it on themselves - not respecting visitor privacy and serving up over-invasive ads using shady 3rd party ad servers, which often are slow and sometimes serve up malware.

Apture is a helpful tool, but not for monetization. It lets you search phrases across Wikipedia, Google and NamePros without leaving the page you're on. We do not receive compensation for its use.

You can see it popup by highlighting a few words on any page of NamePros. It won't load anything further unless you mouse over the Learn More box.
