Approached About Selling A Domain I Own

Hi everyone,

I bought a domain a few years back with the intention of putting a site on it. I never did and just today someone approached me in email asking what I would part with it for. I've never been into selling domains nor do I know how to put a good pricetag on it. I asked for an offer but the person is insisting that I give them my asking price. I personally think he should make an offer first being that he approached me but maybe I'm wrong. This may be more of a general sales question but I don't know if there are any unwritten rules that apply to selling domain. Any help would benefit here.

Thanks!

It would make sense for him to offer on the domain, but since he has no interest in offering why don't you put a price on it? Get an appraisal if you need help :P

Just tell him what you want if you're interested to sell..

Yea I guess you have a point. Problem is how do you put on a price on a domain when you don't know the marketI at all. I don't even have an idea of what price to start: $50, $100, $10,000. I guess I need some type of appraisal. Can you suggest where to start with that? Thanks for the reply.

I'm not sure of that, I didn't buy this to sell it. I just never got to putting the site up. Now I'm not too sure what the site is worth to me; or what the domain is worth to him. I just dont' want to give it away. Thanks for the reply.

what's the domain, that would help for pricing advice.

since they approached you and were unwilling to give an offer, and since you don't seem to think this is a premium type domain, I'd say minimum you should ask is $500. If they thought it was a cheap domain they'd offer $50 or $100 right off the bat.

you don't seem too keen on selling, and maybe it's just a so-so domain?

but until you post the domain you can't get good advice on pricing.

the domain is officereviews.com

I'm not too sure what qualifies as a premium domain. I am open for selling but I am not open to selling it for something cheap, because I can use it to create some value myself in that case.

You can reply that you are looking for offers in 4 figures

Estibot.com values the name at $290, but I see more value in the name for a motivated end-user. I'd ask for offers in the 4-figure range and tell him you are motivated to negotiate a fair price. If you are nervous about scaring him off, say you will accept offers in the high $xxx range and then negotiate up from there.

I also see it having a higher value than what estibot says.

If it's a end user it would likely be worth High xxx - Low xxxx.

I'd personally start at $1200 and say your open to negotaite on price.

I agree with Michael and Brian. This is a good domain name. EstiBot gives it a value that's closer to a wholesale price, as this is not a pure keyword domain. You might expect a serious offer of $100-$500 from a domain name reseller for this one.

However, if the party making an offer is not a reseller, you will need to set a retail price for this domain.

Here are some important considerations:
-Outside of the obviously more valuable domain names, retail prices for most dotcom domain names are generally in the $x,xxx (four figures) range
-There is only one OfficeReviews.com. It's a unique piece of Internet real estate
-A good domain name such as this one is an indispensable asset for someone who wants to set up a website related to office reviews, office software reviews, office furniture reviews, etc....
-Once you sell this domain, you will never get it back in case you do decide to set up your website for Office Reviews after all

Therefore, as suggested above, a four-figure price is justified. Whether you sell it for low $x,xxx or high $x,xxx depends entirely on your motivation and the buyer's motivation.

Good luck,
Josh
