This thread will probably get moved but i just felt it needed said.
When doing appraisals the majority of you are doing no research whatsoever and are just spouting out random amounts of money that are doing nothing but inflating the hopes and dreams of your fellow domainers.
You must first realize that probably a majority of people on this forum have never held $10,000 in their hand, or even $5,000 for that matter. This is not just a number to be spouted off at random, I think the domain "rags to riches' granduer has diluted some of you thinking and made you numb as to the actual amount of money this really is. And yet constantly i see lower grade names getting X,XXX-XXX,XXX appraisals here, that are unfounded and unjuststified. The only remark that comes along with all of these appraisals is "to an end user".
Well "to an end user" you could sell any domain for any amount of money if you find the right end user at the right time, so I personally feel that is not a proper justification of the domain value.
Also when pricing a domain you should use "comps", this is done in real estate. What this means is that you should look at recent sales of similar names. I have recently seen a 4 letter pronouncable .com that means nothing. Just a neat sounding made up word get XXX,XXX appraisals. All the while if you look at domain name journal online, a recent 4 letter sale, base.com brought a mere 110,000 i think it was. So you must look at this PREMIUM 4 letter WORD and then justify your similar appraisal for a meaningless made up "WORD".
If you are posting for NP$ then post in another forum, I think it is unfair and unethical to give appraisals if you do not properly understand how to valuate a domain name.
Sure everyone has different methods, this is only natural, but if you are going to appraise a domain for X,XXX-XXX,XXX I think you need to justify your appraisal, with "comps", traffic statistics, revenue, etc.
