I was thinking about starting a small business appraising domains. I used services like echoarts a while back ago and to my surprise they are still around. How is this type of market? Anything I should know about? Would I have to have an appraiser license to run a domain appraisal site? I know that folks that inspect or appraise houses have some sort of license but not to sure if doing that for domains is mandatory.

I very much doubt you will suceed in this business,

There is 1 big appraisal scam going on for the last few years which has killed any chance people have of making it work.

the only person who can tell you the true value of your name is the person who's going to hand over the money for buying it :)

You wont get 1 domainer who will pay for an apprasal.

Sorry to say.

I'd suggest you get into something differant to save money/time/hassle.

I wanted to buy an old name I used to own back from Verio. They required an appraisal (I had to pay for it) along with my offer. So there is *some* sort of market for appraisals.

well in what way? I am a webdeveloper with knowledge way capable of creating simple stuff like form fields and mysql/php related stuff. I know that you can't promise anybody that the domain(s) in question would actually sell for the appraised price.

Appraisals are just extra addons that go for looks alone. Nothing wrong with that I think if people agree to it. Resumes don't guarantee a person gets the job they apply for and appraisals don't guarantee the appraised value will be the end result.

I would try to stress the parable of the importance of " plastic covered sheets " to comicbooks or baseball cards... the plastic sheets don't make the item more valuable but does have the professional look and feel that there is somewhat of a valued tangible quality. I would be comparing appraisals to resumes and plastic sheet coverings basically.

If I made a site that listed all appraised domains with the the link appraisal pointing to a page that included a professionally designed appraisal background template with misc stuff like page ranking, alexa stats, date and age of domain, how many major TLD's were available at the time of appraisal (I woulnt list the other tlds but just give out a number result) and google results for the raw typ-ins.

I wouldn't want to do any metrics-waffle-house estibot appraisals lol

I have " Domaingos.com " as the name for the potential appraisal site. Maybe I can make it like the Dominos of domain appraisals :)
