btw: I saw an article in the USA today newspaper today about "The Venice Project". The guys who launched Kazaa and Skype are behind it. It's going to be a P2P social networking TV interactive site.

http://www.theveniceproject.com

Great find Izopod....I checked the site out and signed up as a beta tester....however, it will take time to get through the reg process.....they did say - if you know anyone who already is a beta tester....beg them to give you login details and you can start immediately...

and so I am begging....anyone out there already a betatester???!!

Thanks millers.....

I'm a developer for TVP and partly responsible for the "community" aspects of the project, and part of my job involves tracking public interest in what we're doing so I thought I'd just drop in and say thanks for your interest. (Don't worry, I'm not in PR, and I'm not here to astroturf -- I'm just your regular neighbourhood geek!)

We're only just approaching a point where we can open things up to a wider audience, so it may take a while before you can get directly involved. Don't give up hope, though; even if you don't know a current beta tester, in the tradition set by GMail it's only a matter of time before you know someone who knows someone who knows someone else who has some invites, and even if that takes time the current beta testers will soon be able to reveal a bit about their experiences so you'll at least be able to get more idea about what we've been up to behind closed doors. We'd like to give everyone a chance to use it as soon as we can, but as with any project of this size we need to make sure we can walk before we try any of that fancy running business. :)

If you have any questions (apart from "can I have an invite?" :) ) I'll do my best to answer them, and in the mean time don't lose patience -- I promise you it'll be worth the wait!

Thanks again for your interest.

If the guys that created Kazaa created this, I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. JMO, of course.

For example, a ten second search produces this link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kazaa

one snippet from the link:
"Cydoor (spyware): Collects information on the PCs surfing habits and passes it on to the company which created Cydoor.
B3D (adware): An add-on which causes advertising popups if the PC accesses a website which triggers the B3D code.
Altnet (adware): A distribution network for paid "gold" files.
GAIN (spyware): Identifies your interests based on some of your computer usage and some of your web surfing behavior, including the URLs of Web pages viewed by you and other criteria. Versions of Kazaa released after 16 August 2005 do not have this.
The Best Offers (adware): Tracks your browsing habits and internet usage to display advertisements similar to your interests.
InstaFinder (hijacker): Redirects your URL typing errors to InstaFinder's web page instead of the standard search page.
TopSearch (adware): Displays paid songs and media related to your search in Kazaa.
RX Toolbar (spyware): The toolbar monitors all the sites you visit with Microsoft Internet Explorer and provides links to competitors' websites. "

Mat, if you weren't part of Kazaa, then you at least need to raise the bar a little in regards to a career choice. If you WERE involved with the creation of Kazaa, I need to go take a shower: being in the same forum as you makes me feel unclean.

JMO, of course.

Not sure how old you are Rogue, but us old farts were all involved in illegal music swapping back in the day. A friend would let you borrow their tape, and you'd copy it. Kazaa, just made the process easier to do, and on a massive scale. In hindsight they should have done things differently, and for that they had to dole out $100 Million (US) in fines.

With the "venice project" they have done things differently in that they are seeking out content owners to protect their rights before the product is launched---lessons learned...

Rogue,

Can't remember the last time you were this blunt!!

Did Kazaa mess with your computer?

Well, I had to use a card punch to write my first programs, I figure that qualifies me as an old fart too - and you know what, I never was involved in illegal file swapping, a great many of us weren't. I know all I need to know about them and their ilk.

Ah, baseless insults. Super. If you feel *that* strongly about it I hope you don't use Firefox, Apache, or any of the other tools that TVP staff have contributed to.

Anyway, that aside, because of the bad press that KaZaA got (deservedly) and the inevitable association between TVP and KaZaA we're being extra-careful in this area -- the minute it goes public we *know* people are going to be scrutinising it (just as they did with Skype), so we'd be fools to shoot ourselves in the foot and bundle a bunch of crapware with it. Given that 90% of the developers here are major contributors to high-profile OSS projects you can be fairly certain that we're going to behave ourselves.

So, were you part of Kazaa or not? Just wondering. Baseless? Reread the link to wikipedia.

No, I wasn't part of KaZaA, but your reasoning that anyone who works for a company that has something to do with Janus and Niklas must automatically be a lower form of life is pointless, fatuous, idiotic, and unpleasant. Do the entire staff of eBay make you feel ill now?

(And if you actually *read* my previous post you'll see that I acknowledge that KaZaA was a bag of shit -- it was your insults towards *me personally* that I objected to.)

* me personally *

What insults, to you, exactly? Let's see, since you said you were not part of Kazaa, then the only comment pertinent to you is a suggestion that you choose a different company to associate yourself with, which I would still reiterate, actually, since, as you admit, the previous enterprise they produced was full of crapware ( malware, spyware, adware, parasites, whatever you wish to call them ). So, instead of misquoting me, perhaps you should read posts a little better.

So saying you needed to have a shower merely because I'd posted something wasn't an insult, wasn't directed at me, and wasn't founded on a false assumption? I do apologise for the misunderstanding, and thanks for making me feel welcome...

Oh, and for those of you who feel you can lower yourselves as far as associating with TVP, if you've signed up for the beta you should be hearing something fairly soon...
