Nope, there is no market for them at the moment

The owner of the .co.uk also has first rights to the name so that makes it tough as well

I'd say yes IF you can get a good one.

The best way to find them is by first searching for the ''.co.uk'' version because as mentioned above the owner of that one has rights on the ''.uk'' version. The sad part is that a lot of them probably don't even know that and premium domains will just sit there.

Lol yeah. I was able to secure some great 1 dictionary word domains but I couldn't checkout.

Seems like these domains would sit there laughing and taunting at us domainers lol

I have been wanting to ask this.

Does anybody actually prefer .uk over .co.uk? One of the golden rules of domaining is "shorter is better", so dont get why there is no love for .uk.

I persononally prefer .uk for the reason above and I just think it looks better.

Thats because they are not available, remember the registrar database's are not "live" so it often shows as available but its not, in this case it could also be that the word is reserved for the .co.uk owner

I have checked and there are not many decent dictionary word available

Because .co.uk is an established ext that has been around for years, its only really domainers that are even aware of these new extensions. Companies but register a their name in the .UK, but its only for brand protection

Domainers buy domains to sell on to end-users, if these end-users have a right to the name already, what is the point of you registering any names, unless you can find a domain that can be used in the future by a startup, very risky IMO

Just my opinion folks

Unfortunately there is a 5 year wait, I thought I got vodka.uk only to find out that .co.uk holds the rights for 5 years, to decide weather they want or not....June 2019 :( there's more information on this on the nominet.org.uk website

bitcoin.uk is available to hand reg since long time.. still not registered (that speaks everything about restriction)

We'll only know about value when we start to see aftermarket sales. In theory .uk is more attractive - that is one reason it was introduced. But who knows if it will actually be used - it may be a slow transition or it may fail to catch on. Anyone seen a live .uk site yet?

It is only available for the owner of bitcoin.co.uk to register, for the next 5 years, then anyone can register it.

If you look up the whois for bitcoin.uk it says this:
Domain name:
bitcoin.uk

Right of registration:
bitcoin.co.uk

From summer 2014 new shorter .uk domain names will be available for registration.

I think it really does depend what else is going on.

If you get a good .uk and develop it before a .co.uk does something to his domain, then that will increase value. I think over time as the net evolves and new businesses arrive with the .co.uk being sat on with nothing substantial (and provided said business acquired the .uk legally), then it will grow.

Of course, only time will tell, but if you can get a good .uk now, do so. For a few quid punt, it may end up being quite a return on investment.

I own .CO.UK names registered through GoDaddy. My primary rights on .UK are approved, but when I initiate registration process on GD, it says my domains are reserved by registry and I have to claim them.

Do you know what to do next?

(Nominet sends me back to GD)

GD and the US registrars in general are not good places to register ccTLDs.
They tend to handle them very poorly.
