Any success with brandables ?

I see 3 types of brandable:

  • misspelled or semi-misspelled words (eg: google.com)
  • short meaningless names that are easy to pronounce and spell (BB type)
  • names composed of 2 unrelated words (eg: lazzyglass.com)

All three types are available by millions, but the most obvious are all taken (and many are parked).

I've read a couple times that it's not profitable to register new brandables for the sole purpose of selling them on BB. On an other side, this is exactly the business model of namerific.

Finally, each time I have been searching a name for myself, I have had plenty of good to excellent available names. In other words, a startup who decides to buy a domain must be really lazy or have other considerations.

What is your experience in selling brandables ?

Well, you have to look at this this way, if the market exists that is a good indication that there is a demand. You may think that there are plenty still available to register - but at this stage, quality of those is poor, they are hardly pronounceable, words do not flow/rhyme, real weird combinations. I good test would be note down names from BrandBucket and other places and place your name among them and go through the list and see where your name stands or ask your friends to review the list.

At NicMarket.com we specialize in Brandable domain names specially short (5L & 6L .COMs).
We own a small portfolio of brandables (about 250 names) which most have been listed at BrandBucket,
Namerific, BrandRoot & YourBrand (NOT anymore). The last 2 -3 years we sold about 25 -35 names
per year with an average price of $2,000 (sales on our website NicMarket.com).
If you consider that the renewals for 250 .COM domains are less than $2,500/year at GoDaddy you´ll see that there´s a market out there for this type of domain names ...
