Hello, two weeks ago I have registered my very first .ru name. The registration process was a little bit confussing and really slow (9 days!!!). It seems the Russians have a kind of reservation system to hold domains for a while but finally I got a nice one (english keyword for adults).

Since then I am quiete happy with my .ru and the traffic is growing up fast -> up to 15 visits per day.

What are your experiences (if any) with Russia?

Thx!

Nice to hear it worked out for you. I don't think it is good as there is too much restrictions.

Which restrictions do you mean?

I am russian, I speak fluent language, haven't owned any .RU because they're around $20 per year, but I visit .ru blog sites and news sites every day.

A huge possible market, but as you noted, many restrictions coupled with the "unknown" factor that politically they aren't too "free speech/expression/dissemination of information" at the moment, and it might get worse.

I haven´t heard of any restrictions at all. Either you are private or corporate, resident or an alien -> the market has opened for anybody!

And talking about potential risks e.g. unknown language, politics, etc. let me think about the well discussed .in. Both are very far away from home ....

Very true on the .in , but they are slightly different governments, and have different concerns attached.
And I probably chose the wrong word with "restrictions", more accurate would be "hoops to jump through" compared to registering a .com at GoDaddy, for instance.
I certainly am still a fan of the market due to its incredibly large size and young user base (Future o' the country).
