I got an email from vbulletin for purchase of the new 4.0 vbulletin for $130. Is this a good one compared to 3.8.x? Any comments?

The email said that I need to make a decision before the end of the month.

Check out their site, they have screenshots of the CMS system and they have now pushed the forums into beta on their own site: www.vbuettion.com/forum

I can safely say that with this release, they've truly grasped a firm position in the market. I recommend them greatly!

at this stage, i would stick on 3.8 still.
i do think the biggest improvement is the ui and seo friendly url.

I use to have a vBulletin Owned license a while back. But in my personal opinion, I myself do not care for the direction they are going in. It appears as though they are seeking more and more features to fast for my liking. Not to mention their price keeps creeping higher and higher. It might be just me, but I would prefer that they look more into making the management easier. Anyone who is new to managing a vBulletin forum may know what I am talking about. It is packed with features, but there is just to much in it. Not that it is hard to learn. But there could probably honestly be a class on how to use vBulletin lol. I myself have found IPB much easier from an administration standpoint and actually prefer it over vBulletin at this time.

Now I re-read the email, "As a preferred customer with an active license, we are excited to offer the vBulletin Publishing Suite at a pre-sale discount price of only $130 (over 50% off regular price). This is a truly limited one-time special offer giving you $120 off the upgrade price but will expire on Friday October 30, 2009."

is this an offer of a separate new license or is it simply a UPGRADE to Publishing Suite (meaning I will lose my old 3.8.x license after the upgrade)? The email is not very clear.

Sounds like it is just a special deal being offered to current customers. If they are going to be doing any converting from one license to another, they would have to clearly state that to avoid such confusion. Otherwise they will probably have a ton of complaints coming in. But it doesnt hurt to ask their sales team. They have a phone number and email address. Thats what its there for. :)

-------------------------ADDED like 1 minute later :P ------------------------------

After taking a look at their site it looks like their suite includes all the benefits that their forum already provides. So you may want to ask them to make sure. It may very well be what you were thinking.

I'm a vBulletin fan but honestly, I'm a little tired of having to constantly upgrade and deal with the admin panel. Not difficult but quite time-consuming. The 4.0 looks a whole lot more packed with features, so I can only imagine the job it'll be for me to move to it.

I might just stick to the version I have right now and move later esp. because of all my mods, even if it'll cost me slightly more.

But yeah, I suppose there's the issue of that discount price which ends by Oct 30th so you might want to take advantage of that. ;)
