The wife and I have seen a few reports that show people were having to choose between getting on a bus to get away from new orleans and staying with the pets they stayed to protect in the first place.

Pets are just like family. They are life too! This is an additional tragedy ripping up the minds of the kids especially. There has been nothing done to organize a rescue effort for all the pets and animals. They're not even an afterthought, really. It's making me burn!

If you feel the same fire, please start emailing cnn and others to turn light on this secondary tragedy in the making. Thanks for your help.

Yeah, I heard one woman refused to be rescued because the military wouldn't let her bring her dog on the truck. I can appreciate their (the Army's) policy but since people can't return to their homes for months then an exception should be made. :imho:

Its sad, the people broke the law by staying, but the animals had no choice....

GOOD NEWS

Some of the rescue boats/helicopters are now accepting people with their animal friends included. I've seen multiple reports today!

Still, more efforts are needed - so do everything you can!

Yipee! Thanks for the GREAT NEWS!

Step one, done... Step two, what about all those pets that have been left...are they going to rescue those left there already?

Snoopi: I just went to CNN and clicked on the tell your story link...My wife has been burning up the keys all day. We threatened to stop donating if they didn't do something. We've done about 5 bills so far and will do more down the road. We're not rich, but can give more to those people AND PETS that have lost everything. It's the least we can do...

I love animals, but as long as there are people, babies, seniors, disabled, etc. dying in homes and on rooftops, animals would be very low on my priority list.

How would you feel if your grandmother died because a dog was taking her seat on the rescue helicopter?

There will be a time to take care of the animals but for the moment all efforts need to be concentrated on the people.

HHH: a majority of the people who stayed - stayed because of their pets...and some even still their pets are all they have left...

I'm not saying replace grandma's seat with a pet, I'm saying bring in more seats for the pets...at least make provisions for them.

You can have your pet on your lap I am sure. If they can bring dogs and cats on airplanes, why can't they do the same with helicopters and ships that does not have any air-pressure restrictions? If my pet has to be left alone because I only care about my life, I will be guilty all my life and would have choosen to stay or even die with this animal that I grown and loved with all my heart. It is an unbearable feeling to leave something you so dearly love. Just like forcing you to cut a piece of flesh from your arm..

If i was there i wouldn't leave to save myself when my pets would be left behind & would most likely die...

A pet is exactly like a family member, anyone who has lost a pet would know this...

Some people reading this might think "it's just an animal, it isn't human" well i couldn't care less...

It is sad - But I tend to agree with HHDomains still ATM - There are people still being rescued that want and need it - Even though the situation is Dire , Animals do have better instincts and survival abilities than any human ever will. I'm not saying leave the animals altogether - So dont get defensive ... Just saying as long as there is a human left to be saved - They should come first ;)

My pups are more human that some of the people I meet...

I thought I was a stoic dude until my boy pup died. I cried like a baby and I'm not embarrased to say so.

You think that the type of animals that people get nowadays are bred for instinct? Not a chance. They're bred for sedated behavior and looks. You can see starving stray dogs in a thriving city. Why? Because we have stripped their instincts with milkbones and fancy feast. Can you imagine a dog having to nose up timber to get at a scrap? It's just not going to happen.

We've bred domesticated animals to suit our needs and now we are leaving them hanging and justifying it by saying that they have instincts...hogwash.

I see where your coming from but Why is an animals life worth any less than a human life?

My pups are more human that some of the people I meet...

I bet they are too...

They are starting to take pets now that most of the people left won't leave without them. Several animal organsations are leaving to go and help the animals left behind from my area, I think from other areas they are too.

I agreed so badly about domesticated animals. And it is not only true in my view but also proven scientifically true that animals change when we domesticate them. The pets we have lived in sheltered housing, warm bed, scheduled food, regular bath and most importantly, a human family. How are they going to survive in the wild or even left alone without all these? We humans are emotional beings, so are these animals. They too have fear when left alone. Any warm-blooded animal will have character and feel fear. When we cry, we cuddle them and they were there for us. But when something happens and they cry (emotionally) because they are alone, are we there for them? It won't affect anyone if the pet is sharing the seat with the owner. I simply don't see what makes it impossible to transport the animals too. They are most likely dogs, cats, hamsters etc etc...All the regular pets. Not as if someone is bringing their pet tiger up a helicopter...

Flora.
