I just read that too - do you know if it's going to be an industry wide reduction, or just specific to Fabulous?

Fingers crossed for an industry wide reduction :)

It should be an industry wide reduction. The new wholesale price for .NET domains is $4.25 -- that's the price the registrars are paying the .NET registry now. That's a $2.00 drop in costs for all registrars on .NET registrations and renewals.

Fabulous is the first I noticed with the discounted price to consumers. I expect others will follow suit soon!

Wasn't it to do with Verisign lowering prices to Registrars?

Righto. As part of their new contract to keep the dot NET registry, Verisign agreed to cap the price at $4.25 on dot NETs through the end of next year. After that time, who knows what the rates will be. :)

Here's a news thread from a little while back,

I can't see them rising again, i would think theyll stay stable, ~neither drop, nor rise~

I think I remember reading that before any price changes there would be a couple months notice. That would give everyone plenty of time to renew all their names for 10 years. :)

BTW, $.75 of the $4.25 wholesale .NET price goes right to ICANN, as opposed to $.25 on the .COM registrations. Good to see ICANN will be better funded due to the change. This also means Verisign is only getting $3.50 per name to maintain the registry, compared to $6.00 per .COM. If this is more indicative of their actual costs we may even see a decrease in .COM prices in 2007 as well.
