Am I Paranoid?

Sometimes I use tools to find some gems in the unregistered domain name world, and I make lists. For some reason or another, many times I don't snap up the names that I 1) consider to have great potential & 2) have been unregistered for Christ knows how long. Then a few days/weeks later I stumble back upon my list, go to register a sleeper domain, and it's taken!

Now am I underestimating the alarming rate at which domain names are registered every day, or is it possible that the tools I use to search are going into someone else's list for them to reap the benefits of my hesitance?

Watch your mouth there, you. The thing is, I usually register the really good looking names first. Some of the straddlers tend to look better to me at different times. It happens to us all.

You said gems not straddlers and I compared it towards the words you used yourself.

There is a huge difference betweens gems and straddlers, its like a uncut diamond versus a uncut rock. If you wait a couple of weeks and check back into a list for so called "maybe" domains that you have to think over before deciding then it does not hurt that they're gone and normally its nothing to regret about.

Of course there are many unsecure registrar searches where search info leaks towards someone that can take profit from it. If they detect that several do searches on that domain then someone will go for it and register it if its worth anything in their eyes.

I just use Domaintools, and Verisigns whois + Estibot for valuation because I know all of them are secure.

The people who run these tools would be fools for not having some mechanism in place to steal domains from searchers. IMO 100% of them do it even if it's just a matter of logging all domains entered in and then dumping the list into a bulk check for availability and then looking at that list.

I agree, its a bit like trusting an alcoholic to look after the bar - hick!..pour me another one

Just wondering, how do you know Domaintools is secure?
(I'm not saying it is'nt)

When JW owned/ran it he said in a post that he did'nt "sell or report" whois searches but there was no mention of him saying that they did not register the decent domains that other people have searched for.

The post from JW is no48 out of the 188 comments on the following link.

"UPDATE BY JAY: DomainTools is a safe place to lookup domains. We NEVER sell or report those ideas to anyone, PERIOD."

Domain Spying

ps-I know JW does'nt own domaintools anymore.

Is It Any Wonder

I'm new here so I don't want to tread on anyone's toes :(
I have often wodnered about this myself coz it's happenned to me to.
Now, I'm sure there could be some dodgy stuff going on, but I also think that the sheer number of people searching for domain must continually increase at a staggering rate.
How many product launches are there every week (judging from the amount of affilaite emails that clog my inbox it must be loads).
I believe that there are more and more people looking to make money from the internet and they are all being encouraged to buy the best domain names........

Or there again, maybe I'm just being paranoid....

This has been going on for years. (Search for old discussions on the topic.) It happened to me a few times and now I only search names I really want by connecting to internic directly. It used to be that companies and other people who sniff your searches and register the names would drop them during the grace period if the traffic was low. So, I was able to get a few names back after they were dropped like this.

Funny thing is, I recently did a direct internic search for a name that was grabbed by someone else soon after I searched it. But the new owner doesn't fit the M.O. of the usual whois sniffers and it hasn't been dropped after a few weeks, so I figure it was just coincidence. Anyway, it just proved I should follow my own advice:

If you use an online search, be ready to register immediately. Otherwise, be prepared for your names to be gone soon (minutes, hours or days) if you don't snag them.

There are millions of people looking for domains. If you find a gem and it is gone the next time you look, it kind of proves the point that it was a gem. Nevertheless, I would look out for any tool put online by domainers. If a script is running on their server, they are more likely than not capturing the data for their own use.

i always use an odd domain co in India like mitsu --in
to search .com even .in's they never pickup.
They're probably drinking a hot chai under a tree somewhere.

i should mention that these companies have nice features that let you search 50 domains at once. Just stick you best one in the middle.
