How I “Stole” a Domain from Google (Legally!)

I was using Google Ads Keyword Planner when I noticed something in the Tools section: a feature called "App Advertising Hub."

Out of curiosity, I checked if the matching domain was available, and to my surprise, AppAdvertisingHub.com was unregistered . The domainer in me grabbed it immediately.

To test its potential, I asked Deepseek AI to evaluate the domain and suggest a use case. It came back with a solid concept: a comparison platform for app developers to analyze ad networks, explore monetization strategies, and even calculate revenue potential.

Now I'm at a crossroads:

  • Flip it? (It’s an exact match to a Google Ads feature.)
  • Develop it? (SaaS, affiliate site, or lead gen for app marketers)
  • Hold and wait? (Maybe Google wants it back one day?)

What would you do?

Here's a look at the placeholder concept: AppAdvertisingHub.com

Interesting.

16-Letters long is going to be a bit harder for people to memorize to manually type in correctly

Generally, shorter brand names, around 3 to 7 characters, tend to be more memorable. Think about global giants like Nike, Apple, or Tesla. They’re concise, punchy, and easy to recall. Brand names often start becoming much harder to remember once they exceed 12–15 characters.

That may be why Google didn't secure the domain name themselves.

As far as: Flip, Develop or Hold:

Any of those options may work, depending on your skill sets and level of dedication to them.
  • Unfortunately, I think flipping may result in a minimal return, if not just a break-even.
  • Holding may result in multiple years of renewals adding up and a loss in the end, unless you dedicate some time to cherry picking leads, nurture them, and eventually close one. Hopefully for 200% or better profit.
  • Developing may help add some value and offset the negative impact associated to the length of the domain asset. But this will require dedication and time to build it out, monetize it, find the ideal potential buyers that don't mind a long-tail generic brand instead of a short memorable brand.
The placeholder looks ok. Just keep in mind that with the new way search engines are displaying results in organic searches, leveraging AI Assistants at the top, it's going to be harder to get seen, even with good SEO/SEM campaigning.

Two of the key value boosters with development is organic visitors and verifiable monthly revenue. Buyers that pay a decent amount for a hard to remember long-tail justify it with other factors that could benefit their existing brand (Redirecting traffic or procuring leads) or portfolio (Generating consistent revenue to stack with other revenue generating assets).

That's just my opinion though.

Remember, at the end of the day, a domain name is truly only worth what a buyer and seller agree on.

What works for one may not work for another and vice versa. ;)

Under no circumstances would I have registered that domain.

Likewise, I would not have allowed Google to index my intentions through this popular forum.
