Someone is trying to transfer one of my .tv names to GoDaddy without my authorization.

Fortunately, all my domains are in locked status and also called up the registrar of my .tv name and confirmed with them.
Also called up GoDaddy and told them that I have not authorized any transfer request for the .tv name.

I have changed the password for my email, registrar and all place possible.

Just want to alert everyone to watch out for such activities. Just make sure all your domains are in locked status.

Thank you.

Any idea who it is ?
Just this one name ?
Someone paid for the attempt?

Did you receive the authorization email - is that how you found out?

I've been thinking of setting my admin email to one that is used less (and only from one PC) so that it would be easier to spot this kind of thing.

Yes, just this one name.
I don't know if someone paid for the attempt

Yes, I received the authorization email from GoDaddy. Given below is the email from GoDaddy,

Dear GoDaddy.com, Inc. Customer,

GoDaddy.com, Inc. received a request on x/xx/2011 for us to become the new registrar of record.

You have received this message because you are listed as the Registered Name Holder or Administrative contact for this domain name in the WHOIS database. If you are not the Account Holder, or you are transferring the domain to a new owner, please forward this email to the appropriate Account Holder so that they may complete the transfer process.

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
IMPORTANT: If the steps below are not completed, the domain name(s) listed above will NOT be transferred to us.
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To proceed with the transfer, follow the instructions here:
http://community.godaddy.com/help/topic/160/article/1592?prog_id=GoDaddy&isc=gdbba2
In the process of authorizing this transfer, you will be prompted to provide the Transaction ID and Security Code:
Transaction ID:
Security Code:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Once a transfer takes place, you will not be able to transfer to another registrar for 60 days, apart from a transfer back to the original registrar, in cases where both registrars so agree or where a decision in the dispute resolution process so directs.

If you DO NOT WANT the transfer to proceed, then please don't respond to this message.

If you have any questions about this process, contact us by email at [email protected], or by phone at (480) 505-8877.

Regards,
GoDaddy.com, Inc.

At least:

IMPORTANT: If the steps below are not completed, the domain name(s) listed above will NOT be transferred to us.

The only thing preventing the transfer if the name is unlocked was access to this email. As discussed on another forum - backorders are often UNLOCKED by default (@ Name.com anyway). New registrations are LOCKED. Names from Snapnames/Namejets may ALSO be UNLOCKED so CHECK when you win a domain.

Good idea to make sure your domains are locked.

Someone tried to transfer my Satellite.tv into a godaddy account this morning. I took the same steps you did. It's locked, so they aren't getting it anytime soon.

Hello,

I do not know anything about these dark techniques..but if the suspects have a GoDaddy account and are trying to transfer into theirs, can't GoDad trace this activity's source?

Again, I am a novice and may be stupid question. But since there is no authorization recorded directly from you for this action to occur anyway.

It's a shame that GD provides so little info in the transfer E-mails.

Over the last several weeks probably about twice weekly I have received security breach attempts of my email or Paypal accounts. I do recall a few months ago someone trying to transfer a name to some registrar in Italy. I ignored the request.

That is awful.

If you find any info out at all about this please keep us posted.

Best of luck to you Mehul.

Yeah, it a shame. I tried getting the information about the person from GoDaddy but they won't tell me.

Maybe Verisign has to consider auth codes to be needed for .tv transfer.

i get transfer requests that i did not initiate on my domains all the time. mostly .coms not .tvs but it happens. i am sure i have never lost one (hard to tell when you have 1000's of names) and i think i always receive an email so i am aware of it.

i recommend locking your domains and keeping the registrant/contact emails up to date and working. maybe even split up the contact info to 2 separate email addresses (registrant and admin etc) or add a cc email address at your registrars so if an email account gets hacked you still get notices. i also go to the registrars where my names are reg'd and look at my domains all the time like they are my babies, seriously. especially the real good ones.

Received the same request again for the same name.

Same here, I got transfer request I didnt initiated from time to time, through years. Just watch what you are doing and you should be fine. And try to have different email for registry contact then one listed under admin whois.

Another issue which could arise when a legit sale occurs, a transfer email arrives from another party (attempted domain theft). Domain transfer emails don't normally identify the buyer so potentially one could transfer the email to a thief without knowing. Then the seller no longer has the domain to transfer to the real buyer.

this is why you should NEVER transfer a domain out when selling. always push the name to an account at the current registrar. after that its the new owners liability, as it should be.
