There’s been a lot of debate lately about .ai domains. Some say the hype is cooling off. Others believe we’re only getting started.

But to me, that’s not the most important question.

The real story isn’t whether .ai is nearing its peak. It’s what .ai has already unlocked, and how that shift is quietly changing how founders think about naming.

Because no matter where we are in the .ai cycle, one thing is clear: it expanded the naming playbook. And that shift is here to stay.

The interesting thing about .ai is that they became the first choice for some companies (in one particular niche), whereas previous fads like .io or .co were always second choice after .com. However I'm not convinced it's "here to stay". It's just a tiny niche and a temporary fad. Once everything is "AI powered", the keyword (buzzword) and the TLD will vanish from the public eye, just like HD or .mobi, and I doubt other niches will suddenly feel the urge to have their own TLD (.tv, anyone?).

Hype may fade, but .AI domains expanded creative brand naming.

what amazes me is how all the domainers that buy the .ai tld are ones that dont buy other tlds because of the high renewal prices, but doesnt seem to matter with .ai hmmmm

AI investment is surging. 57.9% of global venture funding went to AI startups in the first quarter of 2025. Those startups need domains and with all the best dotcoms taken or ludicrously expensive, founders are turning to .ai.

AI will eventually become the core feature of all tech products and services, making .ai the ideal TLD for that sector.

Superintelligence has a good chance of becoming the next big AI trend.

If it does, wouldn't .ai feel outdated compared to .si?

I can’t see the term AI being displaced any time soon. When I was starting out as a programmer it meant expert systems written in LISP, now it means deep learning, transformers and ChatGPT. If the next step is superintelligence (whatever that means) I think most people will just call that AI, too.

I would say this is the first time that end users actually prefer the alternative tld (.ai) over the .com. I believe this trend will continue as new tech based markets and industries come into being.

.com in NOT king when it comes to the Ai industry. Sorry to send the zealots into a meltdown.

I can understand the vogue for AI domains. Lets face it who doesn't like to see a trend take-off. It's almost like a new invention in an otherwise repetitive world. Some products, particularly those software based and driven are going to be appropriate for many years to come. But like many extensions AI is no exception and is being over milked by those hooked on wishful thinking rather than the practicalities of relevance and application.

Spend a few moments envisaging the products of the future. What wouldn't have some sort of A.I element. whether that be in design, application/usage or future proofing. It's going to become ubiquitous in every part of life.

Dot com made it's mark by being first to the table and the representation of Commerce via an electronic means. Your not going to reinvent the wheel with the AI extension, Although I agree AI will influence everything as a participating element. Those savvy enough realise their nailing their colors to the post with using the AI extension and choose wording with longevity in their application. Same can't be said of the vast majority of registrations, be it .com or AI.

I often wonder if it's mostly the younger, new domain players that seek a domain extension to attach themselves to and the AI extension fitted the bill with its now and future element. Bit like a body Tattoo, Now I've got it I'm going to Love it forever.
