Is .AI Domain Name Extension Any Valuable For AI Startups Or Just A Marketing Ploy?

Many of the speculators and branding firms think that for the price of registering a .AI domain now, they may get a great return on investment as we see a proliferation of AI companies.

But, that may be a false assumption too. Some of the biggest AI startups like Deep Mind have a .com domain name. Even Facebook.AI redirects back to Facebook.com. Neither do companies such as Netflix, Uber, Google, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, all of which are the actual leaders in artificial intelligence, not the so-called “AI startups”. In short, having a .AI name may just be a clever marketing ploy, (and probably a trick to trick investors in rare cases).

But, according to some marketing experts, the domain with .ai projects a startup’s core offering (i.e. ML/Al) and startup companies have customer attention from the very beginning. It also adds credibility and legitimacy in a subtle way which goes a long way in lead conversion.

... According to a survey report from London venture capital firm MMC, 40 per cent of European startups that had been considered as AI companies didn’t utilise artificial intelligence in reality. MMC analysed about 2,830 AI startups in 13 EU countries using metrics like “activities, focus, and funding” of every firm.

In the end, MMC concluded that companies that investors assume and believe are AI companies are probably not. “In 40 % of cases, we could detect no mention of evidence of AI,” MMC head of research David Kelnar, told Forbes. The point is many of the startups found not have any AI capabilities had the .AI domain name extension, which makes it a handy tool if you may want to trick people into believing you’re an AI startup.

FYI: .ai domains broke records today at the close of the auction of expired .ai domains. Think.ai fetched the highest sale at 27,550 USD today, and with several other notable sales

From an article in 2019 per startups and .ai:

"Startups are always innovating, even when it comes to choosing internet top level domains (TLDs). Increasingly, startups eschew the traditional .com domain extension in favor of more unique and sometimes descriptive TLDs, particularly as the internet has matured and the quantity of available .com domains dwindles.

Brex analyzed over 3,000 startups that have applied for its corporate credit card service and found that since 2014, the number of startups choosing TLDs other than .com more than doubled, from 14.7% in 2014 to 33.1% in 2018. In 2014, the most popular domain extensions other than .com were .io, .co, and .net. However, in 2018, reflecting the rise of artificial intelligence within the startup ecosystem, .ai has replaced .net as the third most popular alternative domain extension. Other extensions that have become increasingly popular in recent years include .app, .health, .tech and .services.

In 2018 .ai has replaced .net as the third most popular “alternative” domain extension among startups and is the fastest growing of all TLDs among startups

Interestingly, it seems that TLDs are highly correlated with funding as the average Seed stage company with a .ai domain has 3.5 times the average funding of a company with a .com domain, while the average .net domain company has only 20% of the average .com domain company funding.

Seattle-based startups are the most likely to choose an alternative domain, with 29% of them doing so. This is slightly higher than startups in Silicon Valley and Boston, but all three metros lead the pack compared to Austin (22.3%), San Diego (21.8%) and Chicago (14.0%). Each of the cities surveyed had either .co or .io as their most popular alternative TLD. However, .ai was most prevalent in California, with outsized concentration in both the Bay Area and Los Angeles.

Interesting data from the Winter entries to Y combinator this year - it is a small sample size, but more relevant than data from 2019 I think.....

https://smartbranding.com/y-combinators-winter-2023-batch - scroll down a bit for the domain extension breakdown

You can manually go through the historical data /companies here - https://www.ycombinator.com/companies

I did write the below last December .ai was primed for a great 2023 which has been the case and it's primed for a great 2024

https://www.namepros.com/threads/ai-2022-sales-data.1291068

As the market matures I think a lot of non ai companies are going to regret choosing the .ai extension because of the hype......some are going to have some serious credibility issues

The near future does look bright for those that are holding strong 1 word .ai domains though....
