After some years, it's like starting again: What to use to create websites?

Hello......it feels like ages since I was creating simple HTML pages in 2000 with Microsoft FrontPage and I used to upload them via FTP.....(I don`t even remember which FTP software I used....).

Now, I feel like I`m a newbie.....I keep saying "I`ll develop it ..." but I never do because I forgot where to start.

I have got XSitePro last year.......but then I don`t have hosting......so, if anyone would like to give some advice....I`d like to know which software is better to create simple websites (no java stuff).

And if anyone had good experience with free hosting......I have no traffic...It`s just to start a few sites.

Thank you

Hosting has gotten so cheap that I think you can find good, reliable, paid hosting with unlimited domains for about the cost of a single domain registration. That will get you faster, more reliable, less oversold servers.

I messed around with several programs because I didn't want to pay the price for Dreamweaver. Eventually I did, and now I know why people keep buying it.

If your content is a good fit you might be able to use one of the many free Content Management Systems (CMS) such as Drupal, Joomla, etc.

If nothing else I found I could install Wordpress (free) in less than five minutes with a little practice. I would make a few posts about my plans for the site and that was enough to get the site indexed and the clock running for the aging filters.

hello, thank you for you reply.....but I don`t understand the second part:

what do you mean by good fit? And what are these CMS ? Do they do what FTP did in the past?

If nothing else I found I could install Wordpress (free) in less than five minutes with a little practice. I would make a few posts about my plans for the site and that was enough to get the site indexed and the clock running for the aging filters.

This last sentence.....sorry I don`t understand nothing of it :td:

Thank you :)

CMS= Content Management System. It is a script that you either upload via ftp or auto-install if your host has that feature. A CMS does not require any html knowledge, and has an administration panel where you can add new pages, links and content.
An example is joomla as mhdoc stated, here is a demo
http://demo.joomla.org/demo10/
Wordpress is basically a free blogging script that you can also upload via ftp.
If you need help installing scripts like these just pm me, I can give you some tips.

As a way of combating spam sites, I believe it is generally accepted that google lowers the rankings of new sites. Sometimes called the "sandbox" it may take several months (?) for the effects to go away. By installing Wordpress and publishing an occasional on topic post Google sees fresh content being added and as time goes by the new site penalty starts to go away. In a year or so, when you are ready to build out the site, your work will probably be rewarded more quickly.

I was trying to say that Dreamweaver is a very expensive website building tool, so I tried other programs first. It would have been cheaper in the long term to have purchased it immediately.

Thank you all, I left rep to all of you :)

But did anyone hear of XSitePro ?

I have got Dreamweaver (the trial for now) and soon I`ll have a look at it but I`d like to know if anyone tried XSitePro that seems very easy.

Thanks again!

Joomla.org is down, where can I get the full updated free version?

Is it Joomla the best one?

I also wonder, where do you put the keywords if the website is not created in HTML? If I remember well, I used to list the keywords begore the HEAD in HTML, in the metatags?

Thanks again

Some say that Joomla is the best,
i say its one of the bestand i think this is enough.

I have uploaded Joomla latest version at:
www.joomlaspots.com

Joomla lets you put keywords and description in special menus it has on the backend.

If you a domain like:

www.mydomain.com and u install Joomla there, u can administrate Joomla through www.mydomain.com/administrator
There you add your content, links, stories and you also add your description and keywords.

PM me if you want to see a demo....

Dreamweaver lets u design a website from beggining, it also lets you create static html websites.
Joomla on the other hand(and other like cms scripts) is a php script that has a website already developed. It lets u add content with its interface and if u get a little experienced u can also change the way it looks(by adding or creating templates)
Its a bit difficult to understand this if you dont try :)

pm sent with details....

hm...
its just different.
If you want a simple html page dreamweaver is the solution.
It has ready templates where you can add content and edit colors.
If you want a more complicated website, with registrations, stats, newsletters etc Joomla is a good solution because it has all this built in. You dont have to write any php code.

hm..so Dreamweaver is similar to Frontpage then. I guess I`ll try to learn Joomla first :)

Just to avoid mistakes, could you please tell me which file I have to download here:

http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla/frs/

Also, I found this now on download.com:

http://www.download.com/Joomlaspan-Google-AdSense-Module/3000-2181_4-10456336.html?tag=lst-0-2

--------------------------------------------------------------
Joomlaspan Google AdSense Module 1.2

Publisher's description of Joomlaspan Google AdSense Module
From Joomlaspan:
This is a free module from Joomlaspan to insert Google AdSense ads into Joomla, the most popular content management system. Without this module it is very painstaking to insert Google AdSense into Joomla.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Do you think it is good to add it?

Thanks

Win Vista is not a problem but this software is created to be used on a Linux box with php inside.

There are other softwares that you must install first and then throw Joomla inside them.
One if them is this one:

http://extensions.joomla.org/component/option,com_mtree/task,viewlink/link_id,311/Itemid,35/

well no one told me that before....I have not installed it yet luckily, I wonder what was going to happen if I did.

I can`t use Linux on this laptop, I can`t get rid of Vista unfortunately and can`t create a partition.

So what do I do? Do I install first this Ravenswood Joomla Server and then can I install Joomla and use it?

Thanks
