In February the arbitration of Weixin.com caused a sensation in the domain market. And I wrote a post for this event.

Investor Bought Weixin.com For CNY 30 Millions, While Tencent Gets It For Free?!

Now the registrant and Tencent have reached to a settlement. The ownership of domain name weixin.com will be vested in Tencent. During the limited time period agreed by both parties, the domain name will directs to HenKuai Weixin developer community. The domain name was bought by Li Ming in the last year at an eight-figure price in CNY and used for building the Weixin developer community. Tencent arbitrated the domain name for Weixin.com is similar to the trademark of Weixin and the website included many confusion marks and contents that will mislead the users. Now we are glad to see that the story has reached to an end. Here some investors have shared their opinions of the issue.

Mars: the issue is more a trademark infringement than a domain name disputation. The registrant used the Tencent logo and that is why Tencent will arbitrate the domain.

Daiyue: the registrant of Weixin.com bought the domain name for the website rather than for investing. We shall avoid investing in the domain names with high risks of being arbitrated.

Benz-Xigua: the registrant should not use the domain name to build a Weixin-related product, which give Tencent a good reason to conduct the arbitration.

The arbitration of Weixin.com drew the attention of many investors. On one hand, the arbitration might cause Li Ming a loss of more than 10 million RMB. On the other hand, some of the views from the arbitration panel were also controversial.

Later, the registrant appealed the case to Haidian Court.

In March 8th, the Weixin developer community launched a new domain name Henkuai.com. We believed that Tencent had already gained the ownership of Weixin.com.

In the current situation, Li Ming and Tencent might already reach to an agreement. But the whois information still shows the name of Li Ming.

The news stirred a new round of discussion in the domaining realm. Many investors believe that Tencent must paid Li Ming for the domain name, or traded it with something else. Anyway, the result of reconciliation is good to each part, since disputation always means drain of energy and fortune.

At present, Tencent used the domain name Wechat.com, which worth millions of dollars. As Wechat targets at the global instant message market, an English name might be more suitable. We believe that Weixin.com will also be made good use of in the near future.
