I'm finally making the long awaited, (and overdue), move to, (a one third interest in), a dedicated server. Because of my reliance upon the turn key aspects of shared hosting, I'm feeling a bit like the diver who is staring down at the water below, preparing for his first jump.

My set-up in a nutshell:
Intel Pentium IV 2.8GHz
1GB DDRAM Memory
120GB EIDE Hard Drive (40 GB-> me)
1,000GB Data Transfer (333 GB->me)
CPanel interface and CGI scripts

The IP and name servers have been setup and I have my access codes.

Before I dive in and start changing domains over to my DNS at registrars and start uploading material, I'd like to know more about the waters below, ie-
- a quick CPanel tutorial
- an overview of working w/ your own server, particularly pertaining to what I need to know now, that I didn't need to know before, while using shared hosting. Maybe I'm making a mountain out of a mole hill- not really sure.

Any tips, insight, advice, links to info etc that you could share here, would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and one specific question. Does "Y" on CGI scrips mean that the server is probably not set up for php, or am I confusing something??

1. You can find cPanel tutorials at http://www.cpanel.net/docs/cp/

2. You have to make sure that your server is up-to-date check the cPanel versions on the server, check the Kernel of the server, make sure you secure the /tmp so no scriptkiddies get installed on the server. The /tmp can be secured by /scripts/securetmp in the cPanel server from the shell.

3. Regarding the 'Y' for CGI means CGI is enabled to work on the domains. PHP and CGI works fine on the cPanel server.

Best of luck !

Yes, this are all security softwares to be installed on the server... there are many more like:

- ChkRootKit
- MailScanner
- SysCtl hardening
- Disable Telnet on the server
- Disable direct root login on the server

Note: I will not recommend for up2date, you will have to make sure which OS is running on the server. As up2date is not supported on all OS now a days.
