Hi all

I'm new to this forum and if possible would be grateful for some advice.

I run a UK business and own the .co.uk domain of my company name. I have noticed that the .com version of my company name is now available as a pre-release domain name on NameJet.com. At the moment there is one other bidder and I must place a back order by Thursday to be entered into an auction. The current bid is $69.

I'm willing to spend up to $500 on the domain name. Can anyone advise whether I should bid high now to try and put off other bidders from entering the auction, or should I bid $69 now and then wait for the auction to start?

Also I have heard that although the name is pre-release, there is a chance that the current domain owner can still renew before the auction starts. Would bidding high make them more likely to do this?

Apologises for the long question. Any replys from anyone that uses NameJet/or opinions would be really appreciated.

I don't know about bidding high to start with at NameJet, some systems keep that hidden so you will have to check their system. if they have an auto-bid function then you can put in your highest bid and the system will bid for you.

It doesn't sound like NameJet has the domain, but rather they will try to "catch" it when it drops. The owner can renew it for 30 days once it expires, and then for some time after that in most cases, but with an added expense. If the domain expired less than 30 days I would contact them directly and see if you can buy it, being careful to not mention what your budget is. Give them a nice story and be as plesant as you can or if you know a man owns it, have a WOMAN make the call and see if she can get the current owner to sell it.

If you wait until the domain drops, you may be able to get it for $69 or whatever the fee is, or you may have others trying to get it and could pay a lot more, or even lose it. If someone else uses a DIFFERENT drop catcher service they may get it before you. To improve your chances you could use several of these services and you will only have to pay for the one that is successful.

There is more to know on this topic so I would do some searches for "NameJet" and "drop catching".
