Hi, I am a self taught amateur web designer, I have only ever built one site and that is my own one. I have been asked to build a wordpress website for a friend of a friend and not too sure what I should be charging, weather it's per hour or per page or for full site?

Any advice would be much appreciated on how I should proceed.

Best

Andy

If you are still learning, you can't really charge by the hour. Better charge for the finished product.

If it's a small business then offer donation from them as you are doing as you learn.

If it's a she and good looking then you can do it for free. Just don't let your wife/girlfriend know about it.

Agree with you lol. The most important thing is to learn from your first experience, doing it for free will never lose you anything. Just take the lesson, and use it to go further.

Love the advice here guys however, the client is a friend of my wife, so she already knows. It's a small business (nails, hair, fake tan etc) I'll be happy to have a link to my site on it "built by domainivate" something like that.

The site needs to be able to allow clients to make bookings, show services offered and she wants to write articles/blogs, and to look pretty and all that fluffy girly stuff!

Great, so it is a small business. based on my experience, You'll need to install WooCommerce on the site, it is easy to build one. and btw, who's gonna pay the hosting and things? how about the domain? did your client ask for a .com? or business.wordpress.com? and if your client didn't understand that kind of things, then you should charge your client (for the hosting and domain). and about how much you should charge your client, it's depends on what you are gonna use for the hosting, etc. And btw, My service is around $xx for small business. (not included with hosting, etc)

GoodLuck.

Thanks guys. So my next question is who should I host with? I use godaddy and if I'm totally honest, I'm very happy with them and have never had any issues. Is there someone better and cheaper out there?

There is, Go to HostBlast.net $10/year (unlimited resource). IMO, Their Quality is good, worth the money :). i have been with them since a year. and i never have a problem with their service. (support is a lil' bit slow, but it's still worth it)

Unless the company is actually selling products on the site you don't need WooCommerce. If it's just a three or four page site I'd charge around $400 to a stranger, and $200ish to family and friends.

If she knows your wife and she is good looking then hand her to one of our single member here.
You can't charge her, nothing you can do with her so why not let someone else help!

I need this for my portfolio/resume. Not going to charge but my wife will get her nails done.

If you just install wordpress + a theme free or buy a theme from themeforest and change the settings, add content that's mean a max 100$.

If you create a custome theme fo wordpress and you optimize all images, you're adding all content then the cost it's starting at 300$.
