Ads On Free Wordpress Blog Themes

Ok, I opend up a free wordpress blog and when I go into the dashboard it allows me to add teh widgets etc. I dont though how to add the "add space" to put in tbanners for advertising. Am I to assume if its not in the widgets I cant do it?

if this is the case can anyone reconmend a free theme that is used with the wordpress hosting to use?
