Actually catching domain names

This is where I get confused - there are PLENTY of resources on how to FIND dropping domain names but how do you *ensure* you get the domain, or rather.. I should ask

What service(s) give you the best chance at getting a domain you want... fee based or free. And how do they differe from eachother. For example if I was to have one programmed and offer it as a free resource for ovious viral reasons selling other things - what would the programmer need to excel in ? Would I need to have connections with certain companies such as higher ups in companies who partake in the decision making processes for the TLDs ?

In my experience, enom and pool are about the same. When it comes to the really high-value domains, like disneyresort.com which dropped yesterday, the registrar sometimes keeps it for themself, or it's usually grabbed by the elite domainers... with the horsepower to beat guys like enom & pool because they focus on only a small number of domains a day.

But you do still have a chance to grab the top domains... Last year ciba.com was grabbed by enom.com, and went for 10K + in a private auction.
