Abbreviations in a domain name - a bad idea?

Such internet lingo as "dev" for the word "development". Is this a good idea for a domain name to shorten the length and increase quality?

I'm thinking about buying a domain which includes the word "dev" in it, but I haven't made up my mind yet whether I want to do "dev" or the full word "development".

Suggestions much appreciated! :td:

"dev" is so snappy, whereas "development" is such a tongue-twister

I would buy both.. market the dev name and point it to the development site.

That way you get good SE keyword placement for you name and you get a nice brandable name for your users to use and remember.

Depends on what the rest of the word is like. Sometime 'dev' sounds better than 'development'... sometimes not.

Like GreenGambler said, register both of them and if you feel like the other domain would be better, then switch it and redirect the old one.

IMO, with 'dev' and 'development' it is more of an opinion on what to choose - they both will work good.

IMHO, dev > development.

It's just too long and people tend to typo easily.

I agree with the above, I like "Dev" more, as development is not quite as catchy.
