I am not really a domainer so not thinking of buying loads of domains just a few to develop them, I have seen the names I like but they are taken and I need a .com extension, would it be a good or bad idea to buy the domain name I like with a number on it?

I am thinking mainly about SEO and visitors capacity to remember it.

I think the best to develop are one/two word .coms with no hyphens or numbers. Trust me -- you can go wrong with anything in real-life (Murphy's Law, I guess) but your best bet is to shy away from numbers unless it's relevant to the site/domain, police911.com works, same as vh1.com & 7up.com. 3strikes.com wouldn't be bad for a baseball site, although arguably some ppl might forget that and type "threestrikes.com" into their browser. Rule of thumb: If you get a number domain or similar, you should reg the same domain with the number spelled out.

it really depends on what exactly that domain is, and where exactly the number is placed

before purchasing anything, read all the guides, and make a bunch of posts here. one of the mistakes i made was buying domains i didn't understand, only to realize that i just wasted my money lol

furthermore, just bc a domain is expensive and you are making someone a profit by purchasing them, that does not mean it was a bad purcahse. especially if you plan on developing them. having the right domain is the best thing to own if you plan on developing sites

have you tried introducing yourself at the welcome center yet? goodluck!

I think that is a great choice! There is plenty to learn here, so it makes a lot of sense to soak up all the knowledge you can before making a purchase. So many people do it the other way, including myself when I started, and make some very uneducated choices.

I can't agree more. I've wasted at least $1,000 before I got it right :/

seo is all about keywords not numbers so if that's one of your concerns then you can't register domains with numbers.

hyphen is more like it, compared to number if you only want others to remember it.

i think the radio test is a good one , if someone said 2music , would people type in
2music
tomusic
toomusic

worth thinking about , but as names get harder to reg i see plenty of names that are both letters and numerical

Not trying to hijack the thread, but what are peoples opinions on 1800domains?

Like 1800PetMeds.com for example.

Bingo. If I could get (number)word.com and (number-spelled-out)word.com, I'd get them both, just in case.

There's a similar thread already out there on this topic.

But I sometimes searched for a domain name and Google returns a domain name with a number highlighing the keyword.

From using Google I see that they always highlight the keyword on the domain name and if it contains something else irrlevant leave it out but still use the main keyword, so I dont see how a domain with a number can not be SEO friendly as long as it has one keyword on it.

remember that page ranks change all the time, and so does the process in which pages are indexed. the proper domain name is the single biggest advantage to good seo, but that by itself won't guarantee a top 5 listing. you gotta give people a reason to go to the site

but to answer your question.. google "pizza" dominos and papajohns are both top 5 rankings, and neither one contain "pizza" in the domain name. having "pizza" in the domain name alone does not constitute anything. so in regards to the other domains that have "pizza" combined with other things, there were other reasons why they indexed that high. and google is merely pointing out that "pizza" is in the domain.

so there are other reasons why people visit sites and other reasons why sites index, other than just keywords being in the domain

Thats a very good point bandit67, and I take it from it that domain name after all the bluff surrounding it is not really that important, and people paying silly money for empty domain names just because of "name" are probably wasting it down the drain.

Another small example is www.pool.com Type in anything like "domain backorder" and you'll likely get pool.com... and the domain doesn't have the word domain in it... or as well, the word 'pool' has nothing to do with dropping domains, minuis the fact that one can call it a 'pool of expiring names.'

i'm not sure what you mean by "empty domain names just because of name"

from my experience so far, there is one thing i'm definitely sure about. having a domain that matches exactly, 100%, the search term, on top of having a .com extension is a major advantage to indexing

pool has nothing do with swimming pools or reflector pools, but it is a top listing when you google pools. however, if it were 1pool or p-o-o-l or pool.info, you would most likely need information about swimming pools up there if you want it to index at the top for "pool"

having a 100% unabridged direct match for a keyword, on top of having a .com extension... from my observations so far, could potentially lead to a top listing... and something u can be passive about

rep appreciated ;)
