"A Powerful And Often Overlooked Metric For Valuing A Domain"

There are many metrics for valuing a domain name. This is just one. I will use a real example, goldchronicle.com. First, decide how the domain could be best used. It could be a newspaper, a magazine, a book, and of course, an online resource. In summary, some kind publication about Gold. Next, look at the size of the market or niche. How popular the subject is now and in the future? Gold is timeless going back 1000’s of years, it is well-known world-wide – it passes the popularity test.

Now for the important part: how many domains trump it? Being able to calculate this is a skill expert domainers can do practically instantly. Here are some end-user alternatives to consider: Gold.com, Gold.news, Goldnews.com, News.gold, Chronicle.gold, Everything.gold, Goldtribune.com, Goldmagazine.com, Goldtoday.com… How many trump Goldchronicle? It’s a matter of opinion, but if you keep coming up with alternatives it quickly becomes obvious that there are not many possibilities for a good name in this niche.

Okay, that’s what we’re up against for the purpose of this post. Let’s rationalize why Goldchronicle might actually be better than most of that list. Gold.com is excellent because it’s purely generic. Gold.com does not make a brand though. Can you imagine magazine named “Gold”? Not really, while it’s a great domain it’s still a little too generic, there’s not really a brand in there. Remember, I’m targeting a Gold publication. Same goes for Goldnews.com, It’s a great domain, it’s an exact match for a lot searches, but it’s a little generic too. Goldnews.com just doesn’t have that “wow, creativity and precision” appeal. I added a few .gold domains to the list to prove a point. You can’t often put a word before “Gold” and have it make sense. Gold is just too powerful of a word to follow another. Goldtribune.com and Goldtoday.com are a couple of close challengers too. “Chronicle”, “today” and “tribune” all have the same general meaning in the context, but there are also small differences between each word. The words “tribune” and “today” just don’t have the power of matching “Gold” like “chronicle” does. Chronicle” is a regal sounding word. A word fitting to follow “Gold”. Merriam-webster.com defines “chronicle”: a historical account of events arranged in order of time usually without analysis or interpretation. “Chronicle” is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

This is exactly the type of domain you want to dream up. A premium and meaningful connection between 2 words. 2 words that can not be defeated easily. Stay away from made up obscurities, as it’s unlikely people will appreciate it as much as you. Anybody can make up words. Domains like Goldchronicle.com are still out there. I know because I reg’d this less than a year ago. I will define this metric as: Consider the competition.
