I've noticed a lot of people go after typos of popular websites

How profitable is this strategy? Is there a rule-of-thumb for how much traffic a site need to make it profitable? And what are the most common typos? I mean is it missed letters, added letters, letters out of order, etc.

Thanks for your advice

Scammers love TM typos because they use these lookalike domains as "fooler" links in their mass emails. They don't worry about direct navigation.

For generics they're not that useful--with a few exceptions. A good typo would be poetd (for Poets) because the "d" is right next to the "s" on the keyboard.

A good money making typo might be businesss.com because of the extra "s" or busines.com because of the skipped "s." Both are regged and enjoy some traffic.

I would stay away from Company types - but focus on generic word typos. I have one that does nicely - Arlines - (dot com). It gets daily revenue and traffic and doesnt infringe on anything.

Yeah when I saw vahoo.com up for auction the first thing I thoughts was phishing not type in traffic.

it could be extremely profitable. depending on the product or service, one domain may be monetized differently from the other.

in general you want typos of generic words, with sites that have an alexa rank of 1,000 or less. the typos that do do best are typos that replaces or re-arranges a letter: stpcks.com

you'll be lucky to hand-reg a good typo of a generic term of a .com site alexa ranked 1,000 or less. everything is mostly taken now. you could always offer to buy existing typos off domain holders but get ready to pay a premium.
