I know this has been probably been beat to death, but I just have to vent here for a moment. I just started into this business last Feb, and only have about 20 or so Domains, some good, some bad (usual rookie mistakes), but none the less, having fun trying to make that first sale, parking here, parking there, and also trying to get into some development. Now, this is what realy gets my goat, when someone dosen't renew their Domain, it goes up for auction, usually after a time period, where the owner has a chance to renew the name. This is where I have a problem. After that time period, the name should be released to the general public, and first come, first reg, no aucton, and put out there for reg fee, as I believe this is just a money grab by the registrar.

Here's how I think it should work. Two months prior to the name expiring, you receive letters, emails' stating that your Domain will be expiring on this date (this happens now with some if not all registrars (correct me if I'm wrong) as my companys' Domains are reg'd with DROC (Domain Registry of Canada) and they do this. After the expiry date, you have a 14 day grace period, after that, the name is released to the general registery, for "reg fee", no auction. You've had plenty of time to renew.

In conclusion, I just think a drop should be a drop, end of story, and put the name out to the general public, and be a free for all. If I want to put one of my names up for auction, I'll list it on a forum auction thread or an auction site. If I miss or disregard all the warnings, and emails that the name will be expiring, it's my own dam fault, and hope I get to reg it again (for reg fee) before someone else finds it.

Please let me know if I'm right out to lunch on this, all coments are welcome, and thanks for letting me rant for a bit, but I still say "A DROP IS A DROP".

It would be nice if it worked like that, but large companies (Pool, SnapNames, Afternic etc) know there is money to be made and that is what they do it. If you thought of there system 2-3 years ago, you would do the same thing :) Just my 2 cents.

If the drop catchers didnt exist it doesnt mean youd get the domains easier, people would go private, get their own scripts, and it would be impossible to get domains, drop catchers give more people the opportunity at the names.

That actually was the way that it used to be back in the "golden era" of domain dropping. What a time it really was, great names were still left unregistered hours after the daily drops occured and there was a very good amount of money to be made.

Back in the days of Exody and this profession not being as popular. Man, I gotta tell you I miss it and I miss some of the domains I was able to grab.

But that's exactly what happens..except in some cases the free for all is with in a millisecond.

I think this brings into the equation Domain tasting, or as Bob Parsons called it "domain kiting". I just think we (Domainers, I'm not sure if I qualify, as I haven't sold one yet) all should have a better and fairer playing field. I think the millisecond happens on almost every Domain that has expired. (I have no proof of this, just a gut feeling). I'm currently watching one now that is in "Pending Delete" status, with an expiry date of June 4. I'm checking about 3 times a day, as I do not know the exact date or time that it will expire/drop. What are the odds of me getting it? I would try to back order it, but I think that's a farce as well, becuase it (the Domain) goes right to auction anyway, and they (the registrar) uses your back order payment as the first bid on the Domain. This is wrong. I will get into the back ordering tomorrow, as it's getting late, and I have to get to the office early tomorrow, but I do have other comments on the back ordering situation. More comments are welcome.

I also remember that domains (com/net/org) were dropped starting at 6am Eastern Time for a several hour period. I think a lot of people were getting up at that time to try to reg them by hand. Other had scripts running constantly for several hours bogging down the registrar systems. It actually became a burden on the whole reg system, since around that time you could hardly even try to register or search fora a new name, since the servers were all loaded up. that would also have been the middle of the night in the Western US, and strange times other places in the world.

It'll indeed be nice if a drop is a drop is a drop. But 2 things:

1. The redemption grace period was formed to correct accidental deletions, and
give the registrant one last chance of getting it back before it enters the point
of no return if it wasn't renewed on time.

2. As others said, some people with scripts could re-register the domain even if
you took the backorder companies out of the picture. And there's nothing really
to stop them from employing this (or other tactics) on a larger scale.
