This week, the .LU registry (dns.lu), managing the luxembourg tld opened registrations for 1 & 2 characters domains composed of the following :
a, à, â, ä, æ, b, c, ç, d, e, è, é, ê, ë, f, g, h, i, î, ï, j, k, l, m, n, o, ô, ö, œ, p, q, r, s, t, u, ù, û, ü, v, w, x, y, z, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

The registry organized it in 3 phases :
Sunrise - TM holders & registered companies (Luxembourg Trade and Companies' Register or Valid TM in Luxembourg)
Landrush - Opened to everyone
Domains not reserved during the sunrise period were sent to auction during that phase, if and only if they received a bid on the new platform DNS.lu created for the occasion.
General Availability - From the 15th of December, all remaining domains were made available through all accredited registrars, first come first served.

As the auction period is closing, and that the GA period is already past, it's time to take a closer look at what happened.

On the auction platform, only 13 names are up to auction, it was already the case a few days ago, in the middle of the auction phase.

Now regarding the results of the GA period, after generating the list of possible domains using a to z and 0 to 9 characters, giving us 1332 possible domains (36 characters * 36 characters + 36 for one C names), and then getting an API access from an accredited registrar and performing all of these requests, here are the results :

36 .lu domains are registered with 1C (a-z & 0-9) - 0 available
897 .lu domains are registered with 2C (a-z & 0-9) - 435 available
676 .lu domains are registered with 2L (a-z) - 0 available
*Also includes reserved names, but these are a minority - Data as of 17/dec/2020 at 16:45 UTC

Per status, for all combinations, it gives :
897 names in "In use" / registered
435 available names
15 names in "Pending auction" (Two extra names were probably sent to auction earlier and finished earlier)

What can we note from this registry opening?
