80,000,000 .coms

at the end of March 2006 .coms crossed the 50,000,000 mark (older thread)

at the end of March 2008 .coms crossed the 75,000,000 mark (old thread)

today , a year later , it crossed the 80,000,000 mark for the first time

(80,055,109 .coms , source: DomainTools InternetStatistics)

for the Mar06-Mar08 period ...
registrations were up 12,500,000 per year on average
registrations were rising at 34,200 per day on average (1 new reg every 2.5 seconds)

for the Mar08-Mar09 period ...
registrations were up about 5,000,000 per year
registrations were rising at 13,699 per day on average (1 new reg every 6.3 seconds)

while on March 2008 it seemed that total registrations would cross the 100,000,000 mark in 2 years time on March 2010 (or possibly even earlier than that) ... on March 2009 , one whole year later , they have covered only 5,000,000 of the 25,000,000 needed

factors that contribute to the decline in the .com registrations' growth rate :
- the economy
- the 2 VeriSign price hikes (macroeconomically they affect total registration numbers)
- new extensions
- growth of some ccTLDs
- the high number of .coms in comparison to the amount of dictionary words (there are about 100,000 words in the common dictionary , rising to 300,000 if you include more obscure terms) ... with "only" 100,000 terms it is going to be more difficult (after many millions of registrations) to find word combinations and/or made-up words that make-sense/are-worth-registering

in other news , .cn has passed .de in total number of registrations

Cheers to .com :xf.love:

It is still the most powerful TLD and I hope it will remain for years to come.

Bah to .com

This proves it is peaking and a terrible investment choice. However it will remain the most powerful TLD for many years :)

"80,000,000 mark for the first time" - and yet they are still considering free for all pricing.

if 100 people on earth share one domain, then 80000000 is already saturated.

DomainTalker - there is no precise way to calculate this ... you can make some estimations from the total number of hostnames (224,749,695) , which also includes subdomains , though
(Netcraft Web Server Survey)

today GoDaddy passed 30,000,000 domains under management

GoDaddy Group (GoDaddy + WildWestDomains + BlueRazor) administers more domains than the next 5 top registrars (33,359,269 > 32,464,257)

there are 273 TLDs in total

21 gTLDS (including sTLDs)
252 ccTLDs
also there are 11 idnTLDs , which are in testing mode

more data ... IANA Root Zone Database (click on the tabs next to the letters)

all TLDs with direct links to the registries from Norid (the .no registry)

SpeedNames , search availability for many TLDs , nice for keyword frequency/popularity
(results are not always reliable and the prices are very high)

EuropeanDomainCentre , even more TLDs
(results are not always reliable and the prices are very high)

there is an excellent file from Zooknic that maps all TLDs on GoogleEarth

basically it is a kml file that adds all the TLDs as placemarks , size of placemark depends on number of registrations (basically it is a kmz file which once unzipped it has a kml file in it)

location of the file ... Zooknic Map of TLDs

(you don't need to save the new placemarks ...
after you load the file and check around just close GoogleEarth ... it will then ask you to save the temporary changes/placemarks ... at that point you can click 'cancel' and GoogleEarth will be as it was before you loaded the kml file)

maps that show the percentage of Internet Users in each country , again from Zooknic

here is the link ... Zooknic Internet Geography of Internet Users

I think that there are plenty more to be registered ;)

I still think .com will remain in the top. Sure some extensions might close the gap a bit in the future.
