at the end of March 2006 .coms crossed the 50,000,000 mark (older thread)
at the end of March 2009 .coms crossed the 80,000,000 mark (old thread with more domain stats)

a couple of days ago , .coms crossed another huge milestone ... 90,000,000 .coms
(source: DomainTools InternetStatistics)

Mar06-Mar09 period (3 years) :

Mar09-Oct10 period (1.5 years) :

.US domains.US domains
Hmmm. I fell most of those domain names remain good potential domain names and have no web sites with them at all.

Looking at the older posts, net .COM registration grew 50% from March 2006 to March 2008 and another 20% over the last two and a half years. It appears we are reaching somewhat of a saturation point where there really are only so many logical combinations available for registration. It would be interesting to see the growth rate of .Net.

SiberForum - the english dictionary has ~100,000 words (300,000 with more obscure terms , medical terms etc)

from 100,000 to go to 90,000,000 there must be a huuuge number of really silly (and worthless) domains lol

however , I do agree that there must also be a large number of domains with good potential that remain unused

garptrader - keen observation ... I should actually have made 3 periods

Mar06-Mar08 period (2 years) :
12,500,000 regs per year ... 34,247 regs per day ... 1 new reg every 2.5 seconds ... Huge Growth Period

Mar08-Mar09 period (1 year) :
5,000,000 regs per year ... 13,699 regs per day ... 1 new reg every 6 seconds ... Low Growth Period

Mar09-Oct10 period (1.5 years) :
6,666,667 regs per year ... 18,265 regs per day ... 1 new reg every 5 seconds ... "Rebound" Period

besides the obvious saturational pressures due to the available word combinations (the 100,000 words >>> 90,000,000 domains paradigm) ... it was also the economic crisis (that lowered the available spending money of many people) that caused the huge decline in the growth rate 2.5 years ago

It amazes me that at these levels there is any growth at all. I could see 1/1000 drops getting snatched up but given the types of domains I see from webmasters looking for link exchanges, people need to either move beyond .COM or start paying for quality keyword combinations...

I wonder what the total would be, sans typos, trademark infringing domains, and double/triple hyphen domains....

Interesting to see more than 317 million deleted .COM domains...

That could only come from someone who assumes that nobody uses Italian, French, Spanish or Flemish to register a .com domain name, I expected someone living in Greece to know about that already. :ghost:

malcarada - I only mentioned the 100,000 english words >>> 90,000,000 domains paradigm as a "reference" (an allusion if you like) to the amount of word combinations (and silly word combinations) that are needed to go from 100 thousand to 90 Million

I understand your point but you must also understand the point I was trying to make ... that there must be a large number of strange , weird or silly domains

to prove my point , go to DomainTools DomainSearch and put almost any term (preferably a popular one) ... you will be surprised by the amount of silly aaakeyword , a-keyword , double/triple/multi-hyphen , strange word combination and 20-character+ domains that exist

I would say that people will start to move towards other extensions. Some of the .coms which get registered are ridiculous.

What's wrong with this expired domain now avail?

It amazes me the senseless combinations of words, numbers and dashes that those outside the industry will register to have a .COM domain when it would be easier to find a more logical combination in another TLD.
