Hm I've never seen that before, and the script that their using is from google itself... (http://partner.googleadservices.com/gampad/google_service.js)

I googled googleadservices.com and turns out that it's something to do with adwords - I still don't know how they are allowed to put 8 rather than 3 on a page though.

They're using Google Ad Manager which is Google's product for managing your own direct-sales ads. I've never used it, but it's possible that Google fills ad slots with adsense if you don't have enough inventory for all placements? They do have an optional "adsense integration" feature, but I couldn't find a good explanation of how that works.

I believe Ad Manager just came out of beta ...

If so, Aren't they breaking their own TOS ? I thought you can use only text/image ad units.

I just opted in to Ad Manager so I could check out the tutorials/panel. You opt into adsense integration per ad slot. Nothing wrong with having 8 direct sales ad slots. You probably *shouldn't* opt in to the integration for > 3, but it looks like Google doesn't check or try to stop you.

(Don't know why anyone would WANT 8 adblocks on a page - by the time you get to that last block the bid prices are probably as miniscule as they get, not to mention it looks like **** and will scare most of your visitors away)

Update: Found the answer:

http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Ad+Manager/thread?tid=58b62eea3448d7eb&hl=en

For those too lazy to read it, the answer is yes - you can end up with > 3 adsense blocks as long as YOU only explicitly define 3 or less. Others can appear because they "outbid" your other advertisers (in Ad Manager) for that ad slot.

and here's Google's explanation of Adsense integration for Ad Manager:

8 blocks of adsense? The ads might be repeated, I guess.
