I just learned that you can't register 2 character orgs the hard way. I went to GoDaddy and EV1 and both wouldn't let me register 75.org even though it was available. So then I went to Register.com, signed up and ordered it there. Now I find out that 2 character orgs are reserved and when they drop, they can't be registered again. I found this by doing a whois at pir.org.

2 character org's can still be owned and renewed but when they drop, they are gone for good. But if you have lots of money I'm sure you can work something out. (hence x.com) lol

While you're probably right about the power of money, x.com was actually a legal registration a long time ago by a company that was bought out by Paypal. Hence, Paypal owns x.com now. And I'm sure they'll continue to renew ;)

Anyway, billinchina, did you get your money back?

They just authorize a payment, not charge it, when you place an order to have a name regged.

Thank you for contacting Register.com.

Regarding the registration of the domain name “75.org”. Unfortunately,
Register.com is unable to complete your registration for “75.org”.

We are writing to inform you that a domain name registration needs to be at
least three letters long for the domain name itself, so this domain could not be
registered .We have issued a credit to your credit card for the transaction that
had taken place for the registration of the domain name “75.org”....

By the way, 2 character .org not being allowed anymore is only something new since 2002 when PIR took over. Before that it was perfectly possible.

I have been trying to register a one-character or two-letter .ORG domain, but can't. Why?

Certain domains are to be reserved as per ICANN's directive. (See Appendix K.) The domains listed there, including all one-character and two-character domains, are reserved "from initial (i.e. other than renewal) registration within the TLD". In other words, should any of those previously registered domains be allowed to expire, or if they are deleted, those domains will be placed on reserved status and will NOT be made available to the public for registration again.

Wow! Great for you!

That must be a big disappointment Bill!
Once netsol.com showed system.com as available and I registered it only to find out, later on, that there was a mistake and the name wasn't really available!

This brings up an important question -- how does one renew a two-character domain if most registrars aren't set up to process two-character domains?

They are renewed just like any other domain. The only restriction is on new registrations, not renewals. I have never had any problems renewing at the four registrars I use for mine.

I'm a big fan of the two character domains. Too bad about 75.org being lost forever. I was lucky enough to get ahold of 72.org -- its one of my favorites.
