$40 Design Contest - Critical Thinking

Right, first time offering one of these contests. Here's the guidance:

The site is CriticalThinking.org.uk. I'm after a logo / header design, and am looking for something clean, simple and authoritative. Vertical space is valuable, so nothing more than about 80 pixels high, please (less is more, within reason).

I'm starting the site from scratch design-wise, so there's complete freedom in terms of colour-schemes. Designs must incorporate the ".org.uk" extension, and I would like a themed graphic.

For graphics, as well as the head-scratching / brain / etc motifs, a raven would work (I won't go into why), but I'm open to other ideas (you're the people with talent for this, not me).

Time-frame: I'll be away from early tomorrow until August 6th. Then I'll check in and give feedback on any entries. Competition will close 6pm GMT August 9th. The main prize is $40, to be paid by PayPal, but if I think I can use any other designs submitted then I might offer something ($10?) to one or more runners-up.

I've been impressed by what I've seen in other contest threads, so look forward to coming back from holiday to some great ideas!

Right, I’m back.

Glad to see some very good entries. Nice work; I really appreciate the effort you’ve all gone to.

*** Announcement: I'm bringing the competition to a close 24 hours early, at 6pm GMT August 9th, as I won’t have access to a computer on the 10th. ***

The way’s still open for new entries, but here’s the feedback on what’s come in so far.

yule: A perfectly usable entry, but not particularly thrilling. Thanks for the attempt but there are others that I prefer.

dvirhazout: A very solid entry. Simple colours; clean font; nice graphic. It’s in the running.

the-wolf: Sorry, but this doesn’t particularly grab me. I think I’d prefer fewer colours, and a bit more subtlety to the text. Thanks for the entry.

bquast: Nice design. The v2 graphic isn’t clearly a raven, but the v1 is in with a shout. If you can get the v1 graphic looking more raven-like then that’d help.

umxca: Good effort, but not quite what I’m after. Nice, light feel, but for me the runway in the graphic doesn’t add much meaning, and there’s not quite enough interest in the text.

blue-rain: Fun design, but not quite right; slightly more informal than I’d like, and readability suffers a little too much from the “!”s. Also, the style of the bird doesn’t quite fit the other elements. Some nice ideas, but the end result is just a touch confusing.

will7: Quite stylish, but perhaps a little more ‘corporate’ than I’m after? I do like the font-work and the fade. I’m less taken with the graphic—my main concern is that as the bird is white it’s more dove than raven—and with the extra “i” in “Critical”.

Savesth3Day: I like the font on this, and the overall feel, but the graphic does nothing at all for me.

xpressions: Funky design; in with a good chance! Any chance you could get the graphic looking a little more brain-like (it’s a brain, right?)? And could I see the top design with the url underneath, please?

jonainmi: The style of the Rodin image is spot on, but the text is too chunky and I’m not keen on the colours.

True Snake: The feel isn’t far off, but the thought-bubble idea doesn’t come across particularly clearly, and the design as a whole doesn’t really capture my imagination. Thanks for the entry though.

koncepts: I’m not keen on the font in the second entry, but otherwise I like the style; the feel’s just right. You’re missing the “.org.uk”, which needs to be in there. Could you try working it in to the top design please?

discented: Nice entry, but at the moment it feels quite heavy. Could you work with the bottom design, and brighten up the colours a bit to give it a lighter feel?

As I said at the top, some really good entries. Favourites right now are from koncepts and xpressions, with dvirhazout, discented, bquast and will7 just behind.

I’m full of admiration for you all as I can barely draw stick men.

Will check in regularly between now and decision-time.
