3rd world countries and the internet

Hi everyone, :hi:

Long time since I was last here, I lost interest in domaining quite severely for the last 6months or so. My interest is picking up again with some recent changes in my life.

I am soon going to be migrating to a 3rd world country (aka developing country), where the internet boom has not happened yet, but is inbound within the next few years. I have looked into the numbers and there is a steady increase in internet uses in this said country of 3000% annually and with the recent introduction of fibre, this is sure to increase further. I am therefore looking to get a foothold in some prime internet sectors. However I am not sure which are the easiest to monetise and maintain.

My short term objective is to run service/industry sector websites, and charge annually for advertising on the site. I was just wanting hints and tips for this. What CMS options are available for easy duplication and maintenance for such websites?

I am talking strictly ccTLD here. co.XX

If you were in my shoes, what would you be looking to acheive a foothold on the net in a developing country?

Well that would depend on what the country is known for producing. Tea? Coffee? Agriculture? Tourism?

Once you know what the country is best at, try and develop sites relating to that.

Let me see if I got your question straight...

You are entering a developing country, but you cannot mention which one.

You want to establish some sort of definitive internet presences there, but you don't know in what sectors.

When this yet-unknown site is up and running, you'll somehow need to manage content and upscale templates, but you don't know how.

Of course, all of this should be within a context of a site that is easy to monetize and requires little to no work....

Am I pretty much in the ballpark of the question you were asking?

I was thinking more generic type services/industry, something like pubs/clubs, restaurants, jobs etc... something where I can build a a website to advertise companies individuals and be able to charge an annual fee.

Slightly away from that train of thought, something like blog.co.XX is available to register, would something like this be easy to setup and monetise in order to give users a free blog space, in a subdomain or folder of the ccTLD, eg myname.blog.co.XX or blog.co.XX/myname/

Thanks.

Depending on residency requirements of owning domains, your best bet might be to secure the domains that you want first. Get the best domains available. Take advantage of currency differences and wait it out.

As the country develops and the domains are more in demand lease the doomains or let them buy the domains for cash plus incentives.

Don't bother developing unless you know what you are doing. Secure what you have to to be successful long term and then start networking.

if you acquire the type of domain you mentioned, in this case blog.co.xx you're worrying you won't be able to develop yourself ? :lala: Ever heard of outsourcing...since you say it's a 3rd world (wtf does that mean, anyway ??) work hand shouldn't be too expensive.

No, I probably won't be able to develop it myself, hence why I was asking if it is a hard task - aka - will it take a lot of time and money to outsource a project like that. Oh and 3rd world doesn't have to mean cheap labour, infact normally quite the opposite when it comes to something like webdesign and development, which is considered speciality work in a lot of countries still who are not internet/computer educated.

well if you just want to put up a site and then sell adspace, why not use CMS's like wordpress, joomla, magento or something on those lines.. quick review of their tutorial will give you fair idea of what exactly you should do with them after playing for a bit.

Even if all that doesnt work, read my line in my signature.. I believe this is exactly what we are doing here in India.. you can seek our help  :sold:

I think that if you want good advice you should name the developing country you are moving too. Someone here may know the market or actually live there.

My advice, is that since it is a developing country, you are not going to make any money/business until the country is fully developed, you can take positions now but do not expect returns until a few years time.

I will PM those that are interested to know the country - but I don't want to just post it publicly for anyone to snap up the domains I may be interested in.

Your advice is perfectly sound, I do not expect to make any returns for the first 2 years atleast.

If the registration prices are low, I suggest you register those names first.
