Hi folks! I am a newbie and am trying to learn the domain name business. I posted this on another forum and got some feedback and thought I'd see what folks here thought.

I am under the impression that there are 3 main ways to make money with domain names. I have listed them below with what I believe are the major steps. I'd be grateful if those with experience could let me know if I have this right.

Buying and Selling Domain Names

1. Register a domain name

2. Park the domain name

3. Advertise the domain name via various methods

4. Settle on price with a buyer and complete the sale

5. Transfer domain name to new owner

Pay Per Click Parking

1. Register a domain name

2. Domain name is parked with an aggregator who creates a webpage and adds links and ads that lead to other sites selling products.

3. A web surfer visits the webpage and clicks into a link or ad and goes to another site selling a product.

4. The owners of the site selling a product pay Google a fee for the visitor. Google pays the aggregator a portion of this fee and the aggregator pays the owner of the domain name a portion of the fee it received from Google.

Affiliate Marketing

1. Register a domain name

2. Select an affiliate program

3. Place the affiliate programs ads on a webpage you have developed.

4. A web surfer visits your webpage and clicks into the affilaite's ad and is directed to a website that sells a product and buys the product.

5. The affiliate program pays the owner of the webpage a fee for the sale.

I am quite sure that I am missing something here, so please let me know where I have erred.

Thanks for the help!

For the affiliate program bit. In many cases you can redirect a domain directly to the link code provided by the affiliate company. This can be better than putting up a web page with banner ads etc on them.

I thought most affilate programs didn't allow this. Plus, unless the domain already has high traffic, how will you get people to your page and increase search engine rankings?
