Found the following name at ebay.com for sale:

dic.com

http://cgi.ebay.com/Rare-3-Letter-D...798500917QQcategoryZ11153QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Current bidding exceeds $3000.00.

Sent an email to the administrative contact listed in whois for the domain name. He assured me that their name was NOT FOR SALE and that the ebay auction is a scam. He has informed me that he will alert ebay.

Please pass the word if you know of anyone bidding on this name.

Wow, interesting. I happen to have spotted that domain while browsing yesterday and put it on my watch list (not that I was gonna buy it)...

Impressive image to go along with the auction. Looks like it was made in Microsoft Paint.

P.S. Website Guru, how did you manage to get negative NP$?

Recent NP purchases at the "NP$ Store", but now that you mention it I am not certain how I could have a negative balance......

I think that what this guy is selling is one of those IDN domains with a "dot" on top of the i. Just guessing. Either way, it's deceiving.

The fact that it may be an international domain name crossed my mind, but that is clearly the letter "i" at the top in the "title":

Rare 3 Letter Domain - DIC.COM

Obviously some people do "stretch" the truth in their titles, but the fact that the seller does not clearly speculate that it is an "IDN" in the description is very deceiving to say the least.

This thread makes a good point that I've been following for quite some time now ...

Contact people through their "Whois Info" if possible prior to buying any domains in any Venues (Yes that includes some of the larger places selling domains as well - Scammers are everywhere !). :td:

Agreed. One should ALWAYS contact respective owners through information retrieved from whois source. I have spoken with Sedo, Afternic, Ebay and other venues in the past regarding names I have found for sale which were illegally listed. It is a safe pratice to follow.

Thanks for the heads up. Ebay should come up with some type of system that verifies the whois info.

that wouldn't help though since each and everyone on the internet can look at the whois info and copy it. Then again, if the whois info was private and hidden from the public it would be an option I guess.

You could verify the auction by sending an e-mail with a password to the address in the WHOIS info...

Yeah, appears that way. I got an email from the registrant telling me thanks and that they had notified ebay and was awaiting a response. Looks like Ebay took care of it.

LOL who would buy a domain named dic.com.

Are you kidding? I'd buy it in a flash if the price is right. It's worth a minimum of $20,000.

...just to name a few
