2 Character '.org.uk' ... does anyone know?

Hey!

Ive bought 4 2 character domains with the '.org.uk' extension, they are not just random letters and numbers, their characters have very strong acronyms.

Does anyone know what they could be worth?


I posted them in the appraisal section... but with no luck so far, and I've tried searching the net, but with no luck as to their worth!

you can get 2 letter .uk (.co.uk, .org.uk etc) domains direct from Nominet for £90 + VAT I think.

(bt.co.uk o2.co.uk to name a few)

I looked on the site and I cant find a way to do so

You cannot register 2 letter domains under co.uk or org.uk.
All other 3rd level uk domains are restricted.

There are a few (I found 27) historical 2 letter co.uks & no_url_shorteners.uk registered in the days before nominet. (similar situation to the single letter .coms which are now not allowed)

You are allowed letter-number 2 digit names but they are all taken under co.uk, as are all 3letter co.uk.

There are still plenty of 'good' org.uks but are they valuable?

It makes no sense to buy direct from nominet as it costs approx £5 ($10) for 2 years from cheap registrars.

IMO uk domains are the best value in the world & most secure to own. For instance, if you forget to renew, nominet will contact you to make sure you don't want it. Something very British about it!

You can register 2 letter .uk's - but only direct from Nominet for their fee of £85 (£85 applys to all domains registered direct from Nominet, not just 2 letter domains.)

bl.uk is a real historical .uk domain.

o2.co.uk was registered in 1997 - after Nominet started.

5.6 For the SLDs co.uk, me.uk, org.uk, and net.uk, a Third Level Domain may not consist of only two letters. For example, an application to register ie.co.uk, -a.co.uk or e-.co.uk would be rejected. It can be done but it may depend on Nominet's decision. E.G if your company name is a 2 letter word etc.

No longer. The reason why companies such as BT.co.uk have those domains are because and I quote:

Hi,

It is, however, possible to register two character Domain Names where at
least one of the characters is a number.

Before our inception on 1st August 1996 there were some 2 letter
delegations made, like bt.co.uk. We cannot remove these delegations (see:
http://www.nominet.org.uk/ReferenceDocuments/Rules/ para 4.7), however no
more 2 letter Domain Names can be registered.

Strange how o2.co.uk was registered on 19-Nov-1997 and 02.co.uk are on 2-Jul-1999

THAT YOU COULD HAVE DONE YOURSELF AT NOMINET'S WEBSITE, LEE!

Being from UK & having experience of Nominet's procedures including transfer & domain dispute arbitration, I am quite happy to give advice but I don't expect to have stupid arguments with ppl who won't look at the rules themselves, & then don't understand the rules when they are pointed out to them.

What is it that you don't understand about 2letters are NOT allowed, but a letter & a number, or 2 numbers ARE allowed?

And can I say again there is no benefit from registering direct with nominet. There are plenty of companies that will register in real-time for nominet's retailer fee which is a fraction of nominet's direct fee.

Getting back to the original question of the value of .org.uk:

What are ppl's feelings about the ethics of reging .org or .org.uk

Is it ethical to try to get profit from non-profit-organisations?

My feeling is that there is generally (on the internet) a strong recognition that .org (& .org.uk) are not companies.
So companies don't chase them & therefore you will never get big bucks.
