Out of 200,000 names I think it will be very easy to recoup their investment. It looks pretty simple when you break it down.

2800 names @ $10,000 each = 28 million
5600 names @ $5,000 each = 28 million
11,200 names @ $2,500 each = 28 million

Absolutely. That is why I broke it down to such small numbers to show how easy it will be for Godaddy to make massive amounts of money with this portfolio. They can in all reality sell 10,000 names to break even and profit on the other 190,000 names.

I don't think they will make any money on the .eu domains that came along with those 200k domains. There are probably other categories with equally worthless domains. But I think they will park and sell enough domains to make some good money from their total investment. It's just an impression, but it seems to me that good quality .com's have seen accelerating valuations.

That's a good point. I think I'm a sucker for the ngtld program.. though because I'd rather pay $180,000 for .futbol than say maybe $3,000,000 fot futbol.com. I'd feel better having a whole registry than just one domain. A registry that I could either use and / or sell names.

I think that they are trying to tell everyone how the future will look like and that the future are still .com domains and not .guide and other crappy new extensions.. If the biggest registrar puts that much faith into .com then you should really consider how things are playing out for the new gtlds.

It's all about money. They are going to profit millions just from a portion of the portfolio they purchased. I think it has nothing to do with their opinion of new gtlds.
