150 Domain tips

Hi guys,

Thought it would be interesting to create a thread where everyone contributes a few tips to make a Top 150 domain tips list. Just general snippets of advice/knowledge that might prove useful to other domainers/developers out there. If we get over 150 tips I'll update the thread title.

- tips not facts, so can be opinions.
- no duplicates.

I'll start, with 5 from me.

1) Create brandable domains by replacing the first letter(s) of a common word.

2) Don't start work developing an idea around a domain that you don't yet own thinking you can grab it when you're ready!

3) Don't use hyphens in the domain if you can help it.

4) Does the domain look good in upper and lower case?

5) Say the domain out loud before registering it, is it easily pronounceable over the phone?

OK, I read the whole post. Really good tips, most of them. I'd like to add a few that I am surprised did not make the list (at least I didn't see them)...

162) (That's the last number I remember) Always use a dictionary to check your spelling and have a good long hard look before you actually register that name. I once registered a misspelled name for 10 years.

163) Parking has gotten pretty bad. I recommend using a service such as SEOParking.com to autopost articles on your domain with your ads. They may place some small text links in the bottom right, no big deal.

Google frowns on having many domains in the same industry registered by the same guy. So...

164) Never post your parked domains to Google's Webmaster Tools service. Only tell them your actual websites. Showing them all those domains you have parked at SEOParking.com or WhyPark.com will reduce their rank and traffic.

165) Use multiple email addresses for the registrant if you have too many registered in the same industry.

166) Server speed helps increase SEO. Use fast servers for domains you are developing.

167) Use more than one host if you have many websites in the same industry. When you have too many of one kind of industry on the same nameserver/IP, related domains don't do as well.

168) Never block archive.com (the way-back machine). Google sees this activity as a suspicious spammer or worse. Plus, it is better to build up a history of the domain's development that a potential buyer can reference.

169) Don't be threatened by potential buyers. Be happy to walk away from the deal if you are not getting the price you want. I had a domain at Sedo and when I set it up it was a $150.00 min & price of around $480. I had set that price long ago and I told him $600. The guy told me I was nuts and ranted and raved about the prices set at Sedo, said I was trying to make more than it was worth, and offered me $125. I lowered the min to 125 and raised the Buy-It-Now (BIN) to 600. I told him he could start the bidding at 125 and I will throw it into the auction or he could BIN for 600, thanks for reminding me to update my prices at Sedo. Just do not worry about these things, some domainers are absolutely stupid and rude, it takes all kinds.

Currently, 90% of domain names registered are not being used, so it's no wonder over 23,000 expire daily — ready to be picked up by anyone.
Registering as a ".com" is usually the best.
Predicted to remain "King". and increase in value as more extensions are added by I-CANN.
Register .net and .org. If ".com" is taken then consider using ".net" or ".org".
Net is gaining in popularity as a great choice after .com. If you really want to secure your domain name then register it as all three and ward off potential competition. Note of caution on registering .org: Possible new regulations may require .org registrants to adhere to the "Non-profit only" status.

175?) Establishing your domain as an active nameserver will increase its value recognition in Google. But, it has to be an active and working NameServer, so you not only have to establish the domain as a nameserver at the registrar (and config it as such), but also at the web host (and set it up there, as well). This means that your registrar has to support Full DNS control (like we do at DomainHostmaster.com), and you will need to establish this web host relationship through your host server, which is easy to do with most web hosting Reseller programs (such as available through HDWebHosting.com).

Domain Names

1) Do not use long domain names,someone filling it up in a form or document might misspell it.
2) Do not use technical terms in Domain names.Majority people tend to misspell or pronounce such terms incorrectly.
3) Do not get 'inspired' by a brand name and try to find a similar domain name. People are fast in knowing where the inspiration came from and attach a 'reputation' to your domain as 'copied'.
4) Do not give names that are difficult for people to understand,write,speak across cultures. If you do so then don't mind limited visits to your domain and that too from the locality from where you belong. Have a 'world wide web' approach while naming your domain
5) Do not get confused or too much involved in finding 'that' name and ending up with a horrible one. Just be as short and intuitive. Best, ask a child playing in the park and sure you will find a 'brand name' for your domain. Children are simple and imaginative, something which we loose as we grow older

There are many domain names available like .com, .net, .org, .info, biz and .us domains.Keep your domain name as short as possible and simple - it needs to be memorable, and preferably not contain hyphens.Choose a reputable domain name supplier. A company which has been around a while and is well known is a good bet. Make sure you keep your contact information up-to-date. Although your domain name supplier is bound to contact you when a domain name comes up for renewal, it is your responsibility in the end.

A very important tip about Domains is where to buy them. this is crucial when it comes to saving money. Here on Namepros we can find decent pricing if we search well and look for the right seller. When using the Adwords Keyword Tool, always use the Exact match! 'Phrase', especially for 2+ keyword domains, may deserve a look. 'Broad' is to forget about.

Hi, its a good idea to make a thread with 150 tips for domain. I think this tread is going to be a helpful thread for the developers and those peoples who are yet thinking to register a domain. From my point of view a domain name should be in shorter so that people can easily remember. And it should be related with the name of the product. And your website should contain very detailed contains of the product.

Another Tip: Newbies often overlook yearly renewal fees and think that cost of a domain name is just reg fee. Once an year is complete, most of them have 50 to 100 domain names. Everyone realises the real cost of domain names as they start paying renewal fees. Therefore organize yourself with domain names you own. Temptation to buy any good sounding domain name is very high when you are a newbie. Think twice before you buy any domain name.

Keep an inventory (a spreadsheet would be a great idea) of all your domains with at least the following information for each name: registration and expiration dates, registrar, amount spent for registration or renewals.

Also keep track of the TOTAL amount of money you've spent and the TOTAL you've earned in domaining: this way you'll have the balance of all your activities.
