150 Domain tips

Hi guys,

Thought it would be interesting to create a thread where everyone contributes a few tips to make a Top 150 domain tips list. Just general snippets of advice/knowledge that might prove useful to other domainers/developers out there. If we get over 150 tips I'll update the thread title.

Rules
- only 1 sentence per tip.
- must relate to domain names (buying/selling/development etc...)
- tips not facts, so can be opinions.
- no duplicates.

I'll start, with 5 from me.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

1) Create brandable domains by replacing the first letter(s) of a common word.

2) Don't start work developing an idea around a domain that you don't yet own thinking you can grab it when you're ready!

3) Don't use hyphens in the domain if you can help it.

4) Does the domain look good in upper and lower case?

5) Say the domain out loud before registering it, is it easily pronounceable over the phone?

Make sure your domain register will HONOR the policy for you to cancel within three days.

Some companies won't allow you to cancel at all with a NEW registered domain name!

Well, that rule was applicable few months back I guess, I mean refund policy. The thing was if you register a domain name ans wants to cancel it then you may do it within 5 days from the date of registration and receive refund.
But that system has gone now. If you register a domain name then it is final and can not be canceled.

I cant believe this THREAD is still going in its third year.

I'd like to add one more important lesson I've learned over the years:

A good domain name should have certain - what I call - Click Curiosity. Some names just have this "must click" to see. So sometimes and in certain categories, pure clarity and correctness isnt the best name.

Cheers to all old domainer friends. We're still going strong! It's a great business if you have the patience and discipline to learn. Some luck is good too.

Before selling a domain, go to Sedo and other domain sites and try to find the asking price of similar domains. It doesn't hurt to know, and it may be a good price base.

Well I am late to post but anyway i will put my comments.....

1. Never Ever register a Brand Name Domains that are registered companies in physical world. If you do buy then you will be sued by their lawyers. So Beaware of such name(s).

2. Always Register your business domain before you opening any business or planning to start a business with your chosen name. First Research then Register and then make a rest business plan.

Ensure you have enough credit at your registrar to make an IMMEDIATE payment - now now now - without having to go through the process of filling out credit card details or something equally slow.

That few lost seconds might cost you a name you really wanted!

Also, if you use a registrar that gives you fifty thousand options when you want to register a name (like click here for privacy - take this option, do you want 20,000 e-mails, etc, etc) then NEVER use that register to get a name quickly. Always have a quick and easy registrar at hand.

7) Don't register domains while under the influance of drugs or alcohol. (just say no)

47) Add foreign language prefixes or suffixes to english words. Spanish, Italian language prefixes are prefered to make a brandable domain

ccTLD stands for Country-code Top Level Domains like .in (India), .ca (Canada), .us (United States). Each country has its own official ccTLD.
