[RESOLVED] - Domain Name Stolen...A Horrible Story and a Warning...

Hi All. I've not been in here for a number of years, but a week ago I had my domain of 20 years (dustie.com) stolen and I have to tell the story. it looks like I'm out of luck here, and out a lot of money, but maybe my story can help prevent this happening to someone else. This happened at Godaddy, though I don't blame them, and i still have all of my domains with them, as well as my websites. I blame the no good slimy thief who stole my domain name!

Here's the story... First off, my name is Dustie, and I've owned Dustie.com since 1998.
Sometime in 2017 (I think) I decided to go ahead and list dustie.com as a premium domain for a high price. It being my name, I wasn't real keen on selling it, but, as they say, everything is for sale for the right price. I'd had someone offer me 5,000.00 for it, but after taxes (it would have put me in a higher tax bracket for the year) and commisison, it wasn't worth it wasn't worth it to sell it for that amount. However, I figured that if someone were willing to pay that for it, maybe someone would pay even more. So I listed it as a premium domain for 20,000.00. I seriously didn't think it would sell but it woudn't hurt to list it (or so I thought).

All was well, until a bit over a week ago. I had been out that evening and didn't get home till nearly 10:00 PM. It was 11:00 before I was able to get onto the computer. That's when I saw the 5 emails from Godaddy.... I'm sure you can imaging my reaction when I saw that, within 20 minutes, my domain name, dustie.com, which I have owned since 1998, sold and transferred for a mere 450.00? I was sick...simply sick. How could this happen! First off, I've never had a domain name sell and transfer inside of 21 minutes and then be paid for it a little over a day and a half later. That's unheard of!

Immediately after reading those 5 emails and realizing my domain name had sold for less then 5% of what I'd had it listed for on Premium Domains, I was online with Godaddy help. Though they were sympathetic, no one there could help. They said I'd have to wait till morning and call auctions help. Needless to say, I didn't sleep well and was on the phone as soon as they opened their office. Though I was on the phone for a good 30 or so minutes with them (a good part of that time on hold), I was ultimately told there was nothing they could do for me. My domain was bought, paid for, and transferred and that was that! (Oh, and this even though they found the price had been tampered with twice that same night, long before I got online). They said this had to be me because no one else had access to that account! That was proof to me that someone was in there messing with my account and screwed me over big time, but not to them.

So I've been sick all week...trying to forget that someone illegally reached into my pocket and stole a lot of money , as well as my NAME! Needless to say, even a week later, I'm just sick about the whole thing.

Today, on a lark I looked up dustie.com on godaddy and was sick all over again when I saw that it is now listed as a premium domain for 12,000.00 (by the person who stole it from me?). That's just wrong, in so many ways! How do I get over this? I want to know how this could have happened!!??

I am posting in here as a warning to you all, as well as wanting to go on record that this did happen, regardless that the guy at [email protected] said that dustie.com had always been listed at 450.00 and it was a legitimate sale! I know how to use GoDaddy. I'm a long time user and have over 50 domain names with GoDaddy, more the half listed as premium domains! Ever since Dustie.com was originally listed as a premium domain at 20,000.00 that was the price that showed up whenever I went to maintain my premium listings. It always stuck out like a sore thumb, because most my other domain names are listed below 1000.00. There is simply no way Dustie.com was ever listed for as little as 450.00. Even go daddy suggested a price of nearly $5,000 as a premium listing starting point for dustie.com.

Without a doubt, my godaddy account was hacked and my domain name of 20 years stolen from me and relisted for 27 times what they paid for it! That burns me to the core!!!

I'm sure that, since this happened to me it will surely happen again. If any of you hear about such a thing, could you please have them get in touch with me? If I can find others that this has happened to, maybe we can do something as a group?

In the meantime, if you have a valuable domain name on Godaddy Premium domains, then you might want to take screen shots of the listed prices. Also, I was told that if I had the original email when it was listed that would be proof that it was listed at 20,000.00. Alas, I did not have it...I had, not long ago, deleted emails that were more then a year and a half old. If you don't have emails for your most valuable domain names, then remove them from listing, then relist them to get a new email and save those emails just in case!!

And Thanks for listening to my very long rant!

Dustie
(was [email protected] for over 20 years...now I am [email protected] and my site is dustie.art ... cool name, but it's certainly not worth what I lost in dustie.com!)

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
MapleDots, I do thank you so much for having been willing. Since the domain was not transferred to you, then does this mean you didn't get charged for it? I certainly hope so. If your payment did go through, Maxtra did say he would refund you if you asked so if you are out the money, please ask. I so want everyone to be put back to rights on this and have no one be out anything.

I did pay for it and the transfer was initiated so I figured I would wait a day to see if it lands in my account or not.

Bob Hawks..there is no one that even remotely has access to my computer other then my husband, who is quite computer illiterate. All he knows how to do is shop Amazon and put things into the cart. Even then I have to complete the purchase process for him.

Do you have a mischievous cat? :cat:

This was like watching an episode of Dallas.

I am just so grateful that mapledots and maxtra have agreed to give my domain back, regardless of what GD determines. Because of this they are both rock stars in my book and great members of this website. It seems the domain name is locked at the moment though, and for now the ball is in GD's court.

I have such a headache...I need a nap.

No, just two lazy fat dogs who would rather snore then use the computer!

Glad you are finally getting your name back. Don't know what else to say, cos everything about this seems and sounds strange and fishy to me.

But why would you do that? Isn't it better to investigate who's really is the thief?

It does sound fishy! Most likely OP mistakenly put $450, but is adamant they haven't. Everything idea seems to have been dismissed. It reminds me of insurance fraud xD

I am refunding @MapleDots the $5k and transferring to you @Dustie if they dont even if I take a loss as said earlier

Hopefully someone from GoDaddy will say what happen with the listing so price error does not happen in the future for anyone if that was the case

That is all from me

Thanks

Godaddy has a lot of errors like this. If you understand even a little about software, you'd be able to guess why.

Order / command for changes are put into a large, distributed queue. What goes in, sometimes doesn't come out the same. I've had my own problem experiences with Godaddy. A normal system, errors would be very rare. As a system grows, the bugs and flaws become more apparent and more expensive to fix.

In any case, the fact Godaddy won't supply a list of IP addresses that have logged into an account is nuts.

Ask Boeing.

ya software error is one possibility. I haven't heard much about this though, so maybe rather new or uncommon if that's the case.

I'm not ruling anything out, I just find it very unlikely the owner would list a domain He's held since 1998 for $450

Afternic and Godaddy are two different company before the merge. The database architecture are completely different. After the merge, They have to create a way to sync the data among those two databases. In this case, it's not uncommon to sacrificed some outdated data and directly sync with latest record only due to compatibility.:xf.cool:
So technically it's possible to wipe out the pricing history when the price is update via sync. It also fits the case you described.

I have worked with some really awful systems that have been updated and updated so many times. They look great on the frontend but underneath it's one pile of crap fixes piled onto another.

Looking at the interfaces at these domain reseller sites I see awful design (some don't give a crap about their FE), there are bugs, inconsistencies, Sedo has a few irritating bugs.

See image here from the 'Sales settings' view for example.

So here we are in an industry of predominately American companies where there are assets worth millions being bought, sold, auctioned and parked and the software looks like it was written in the mid 1990's.

What a mess!!!

My professional opinion as a Systems Developer and programmer with over 30 years experience.

Sort it out people. Up your IT budget from $50/month or whatever it is to a budget worthy of the services you are supposed to be providing.

Blockchain for this branch is a must I think. There also seems to be some insinuation that employees are resetting prices so they can steal domains at cut prices.

What kind of administration tools do they use?

Sounds like a hackers playground.

true.

@Sedo all my domains are showing fine at "Standard Overview", but 1 domain is missing at the "Sales Settings"-view.
This is not critical, but should be fixed.

I don’t believe for a second that it was “always” listed for $450. Would’ve been purchased long ago in that case. It also seems very unlikely that this was an account hack.

The more likely scenario is that the OP simply listed it wrong and didn’t realize. In this case godaddy should reverse the purchase and give the domain back. It wouldn’t be the first time this type of mistake happened.
My thought exactly!

Joe Styler is currently looking into this. At least they did discover that I did have it listed for 20,000.00 originally. Now the 20,000.00 question is how did it get changed from 20,000 to 450.00? At least now folks know I was telling the truth and this isn't simply a case of "seller's remorse" as someone mentioned earlier. I can't imagine a seller alive who would change a premium listing domain from $20,000.00 to 450.00!

Well I am quite new to this community but it is quite disturbing to hear some making accusations about employees engineering the theft of assets. Is this happening?

The deal done and the funds have transferred, the domain is mine.

If there are any shady dealings here and the domain was truly stolen I will personally donate it back to the previous owner.

Nothing more to see here until the investigation concludes.
But why will you buy a domain name of this nature when you already knew it had some blemish? This whole thing is so weird to me lol.

I guess they don't have an IT dept then.

well, at least SEDO does not have any "Artificial Intelligence"-robots, who change the pricing by themselves...
