A good read:

have already lost money on .web, in 2000 Image Online Design put in an application for .web and sold pre registrations, I paid for about a dozen huge word.web domains, lots of people did, it was a first come first serve system and if I remember correctly they were at least $35, I know lots of people did because most of the words I would check were already paid for or going quick, they sold lots of pre registrations. Unfortunately the application was not approved in that round and there was no .web and no .refunds, there is a .web coming now though, I wish my pre registration backorders were still good.

Read the full thing--it's interesting: http://www.domainpicks.com/13736/how-i-aready-lost-money-on-a-new-gtld/

That guy's rambling makes my head hurt (bad).

But, his situation won't be unique and will be replicated hundreds of times over, and exponentially worse.

As annoying as his rambling is, I think we'll see worse cases of this soon, like you said.

I read the whole article some days ago and definitely we shall see more from these kind of articles on the future after the new gTLDs demise.

Do you believe that this will happen again with the new gTLDs?
United Domains has opened preregistration for gTLDs for a fee, but they write:
Please confirm your non-binding pre-registration. Once the domain extension launches we will automatically submit your order to the domain registry. Your credit card will be charged for the domain registration fee about two weeks before launch. Please make sure your billing information is up to date. United Domains has successfully registered over 70% of all pre-orders submitted for previous domain launches. However, you will be completely refunded for any pre-order we cannot register successfully.
Is this rubbish?

I've done lot's of per-registrations with 101domain, and I've always had my money returned if I didn't win the name. Maybe it depends on which registrar you're using?

This is why people should not prepay for any sort of virtual preorders. First the service, then the money.

Why are so many of you spamming this place with NON-brandable domain names???

Yeah, me too, 101 does however say the fees are non-refundable upon checkout, so they don't have to.

Your definition of 'brandable' isn't the same as everyone's, keep in mind

Why are so many of you spamming this place with NON-brandable domain names???
