Should I buy the domain..
and before I could even get to the name, she responded with a big "NO!"
I paused for a minute or so, then continued with the name "blahblah.extension"

She paused for a few seconds.. then said "Well why don't you sell what you already have?"

I said "It's good to keep fresh inventory." To which she responded "I think you should sell, before you buy."

She raised a good point. I mean, we can keep on adding names to our inventory, but no matter the excuse, at some point its poignant to take a step back and focus on existing carrying costs and what we already have. It's easy to get excited about a new name, because we don't it yet. But this is the same feeling that we had about just about every domain we pick up, isn't it? And if it doesn't sell, there it sits.

Point is, some domains take longer than others to sell but in the meantime year over year we have to pay the price to hold them, and there will always be "fresh" names to add- it's basically never-ending. So unless you're selling regularly or have a steady stream of capital to keep renewing, don't let a quick fancy make a dent in your wallet.

I think, this was her wisdom. Or common sense. My wife at times is my sounding board, to which I am extremely grateful for. Other times, I wonder what the heck I am missing out on, but such is life. You'll never miss what you never had.

Do you have a sounding board that you filter your domaining through, or do you fall for impulse buying more often than not?

Hope you all have enjoyed your summer thus far, and enjoyed your domaining even more. Let's sell, before we buy. :)

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
The problem I see here is "asking your wife"
NO NO NO
There is a good reason the brain of male and female is ALWAYS different.

You realize there are female domainers too, right? ;)

I have very poor hearing :xf.frown: (true - hear very little above 150 Hz).
Sometimes it can be an advantage.:xf.grin:

It's called "Selective Hearing," and is actually an advanced form of communication that we men have been endowed with.

While investing, I think wife is always right.
(Atleast this post saves me from her for few days:ROFL:)

Just kidding.

But before investing, just to make sure atleast a 5% of the portfolio is sold in an year.

Otherwise the buying method may be outdated

The real thing, is the trust that our wifes put on us by allowing us to invest on domain names... it is not the case for all others, you should be happy about this first, and recieving another advice and view from your other hearth part is the most trustful thing and benefical for you than you will get from any experienced domainer on this planet.

I agree with you.

From 3 people. My wife, business partner, and friend have all become very good at pricing domains.

For domain investors, I think we are all better off bouncing ideas off the right people. Each of them have saved me from bad purchases in one year or another, and all of them have helped me make great purchases.

My friend, who I often split larger domain purchases of $500-$5,000 with, usually sums it up with 2 words. I send him a domain I'm thinking of buying and he'll either respond back with "how much" or "I'm in". He runs a plumbing and HVAC company, and sees large job contracts, so he realizes what businesses will pay for the right domain when it brings value. Occasionally, he'll just go silent with no response to my message. That's typically his way of saying "no" (or possibly that he's run out of money).

I must admit, even if I get conflicting advice, I still hold veto power and will use it 50% of the time. :xf.wink:

Next time she discusses buying more clothing ask her to sell the stuff she will never wear but holds onto just in case... See how that goes. Good luck.
That might have castrational.. err catastrophic consequenses, where a visit to the "sounding board" would quickly turn into a visit to the "chopping block"..yikes

She's in the teaching profession, so you know what they say..when you've got a hammer, everything looks like a nail. (Guess for us it be more like, when you're a domainer, everything you see looks like a name.) Re. for domain investors, bouncing ideas off the right people; I like that and makes a lot of sense too. This forum for me is exactly that.

If my wife only knew the cost of renewals...

She knows that I need to sell some domains to justify continued renewals. Luckily, I woke up this morning to a BIN sale that more than covers this year.

I do occasionally run a name buy her for an opinion. I bought a name on the forum here for under $20 and she estimated the value to be $20k. Hope she's right!

Well old jokes aside, one of the best domainers in here is a woman.

I agree with the OP.

My wife and I are a team. We decide everything together that affects our family, economy, homelife, future etc. Domaining isn't really affecting our economy in a big way because I am not overspending on it so she really doesn't have much to do with this.

Don't spend so it hurts.

Amazing.

There's a ".extension"

Listen to your wife;
"A happy wife, is a happy life." P :)

...said "Well why don't you sell what you already have?"...

She raised a good point....

My mom told me the exact same thing this morning, while we were discussing a sale I completed yesterday...

Sometimes we may need to listen to different opinions on what we do. This is called need for approval. I don't think this is a serious problem as long as its frequency is reasonable.

The biggest problem here would be to take an unprofessional opinion into consideration, assuming "the wife" is not an expert in the field. Gender, wife, husband, father, mother are irrelevant points. The most important point is expertise level of the person who tells you on what you do.

This is a basic opinion that apply to any purpose which professionals forgot and sometimes do not take notice.

I stopped bothering my wife about domains. Her usual response is: "you're such a nerd".

My wife is in control of our finances and ensures I don't go over the top buying domain names.
I sometimes ask for her opinion on some names

Well said. I am speechless

Should ask a girlfriend instead.
If you ask a question then here is the answer from:

Your wife: "Why do you do that? That's not a good name"

Your girlfriend "You can do whatever you want Honey"

So pick one.

Follow your gut/intuition but don't break the bank. If you're not completely confident it's a winner and need feedback from someone/anyone else on a name, let it pass.

Easy solution: Sell your wife, buy more domains. 😜
