May I ask how the employment there, taxes, cost of living?
Before this crisis we had an unemployment rate of about 7-8%. The Island depends a lot on tourism... it's main attraction! I would say that at least 60-65% of jobs are related to the tourist industry. But now the airport is virtually closed, vacations cancelled, anyone coming in has a 14 day quarantine, all Cruise ships were cancelled since about 3 weeks ago. Souvenir shops, restaurants, tourist tours several hotels closed... major Tourist events cancelled, in other words an almost 100% lockdown.
Like elsewhere people are asked to stay home, avoid groups bigger than 5 people. Police and some army are out there to enforce these restrictions.
So, if you think you have it bad in the US, we have it considerably worse here, due to our dependence on tourism.
Cost of living is very affordable for someone coming from outside, like the UK, France, Germany, USA etc. Things like gasoline are expensive... probably 3x more expensive than the US, but on the other hand car insurance is a lot cheaper than in the US.
I remember when I lived in Los Feliz, Los Angeles (in the 70's) I was paying almost $500 for car insurance, while here it was less than $100.
Today I pay about $190 for my car insurance!
During this crisis people have generally been orderly. I went to the supermarket today, only 8 people in line to get in. All shelves were full, including lots of toilet paper. Only shelves that were 95% empty were the yogurts.
When I see images around the world of many dozens of people waiting in line at the supermarkets, I thank my lucky stars for living here.
