Hello guys
I have joined the auction for the domain name SportsEquipment.com
My highest bid was $7,100 and the domain sold for $12,000
Do you think it's worth it?
Thanks.

The old owner still has another 7 days to renew it.

I'm not able to think of a single good reason for why this was not renewed.

Use your imagination! :)

They probably shopped it around to every single sports equipment retailer over the years and/or had it brokered already; resulting in 'terrible' offers that weren't worth a wealthy owner even selling it. Sometimes DN owners would rather see it go back to the pool rather than to sell, I've heard that sentiment from many SEO's and dev's.

It could always just be an attempt to get attention from investors, and they have every intention to renew and then sell for $5k more to a starry-eyed buyer.

Who knows... all I know is that for $12k there are much better names to be had from an investment standpoint.

99.9% chances of this getting renewed. This was a great publicity for the domain.
Now it is way easier for him to sell it higher than earlier quoted price.
Sadly, this is the only way of getting a true appraisal.

Yes, there are better opportunities out there for $12,000, but renewing doesn't cost $12,000, it only costs $9. I did not disagree with your observation on the auction price, but with your position that this name was "not renewed for a good reason". From a domain investing standpoint, there are zero good reasons for not paying $9 to renew a name the reseller market values at $12K, and that is an upgrade for a ton of shops using longer version of the name or exactly the same name in other extension. This name is worth thousands regardless of how you look at it. I don't see reason behind throwing away thousands to save nine dollars.

If you think this name was not renewed for a good reason, do you only renew names of better quality than sportsequipment.com in your own portfolio?

It still hasn't been renewed.

Here's another one that could have been had for cheaper than it will sell for in a domainer auction:
Domain: R E P A I R T E C H . COM
Current price: $449 (2 days to go, will end in the four figure range imo).
Prior to expiring it was Afternic listed for $355:

Problem is that there is no good way to search Afternic and Sedo for such listings. They have both stopped providing expireddomains.net with marketplace inventory api (losing out on a lot of sales as a result! These marketplaces are taking backwards steps and not making obvious improvements and adding features that would improve their bottom line..). So there are a ton of good names listed with reasonable price on these marketplaces, but because there is no way to find them, domainers don't pick them up when they are listed at or below reseller prices, and when they expire, they pay MORE than it was listed for prior to expiring. I see this happening all the time. I'm sure sportsequipment.com would have been picked up by a domainer if only they had known it was listed for sale at $7K at afternic.

Or, alternatively, people are paying above market value at GD auctions the last few years....:)

I can't understand that. You bid up to 7.1K, which is no small change but you're asking us if the price is right ? Seriously ?

I am not asking about my bid, I am asking about the sale price.

Great domain!

Even though EMD names are not as useful as before, I would think this might sell for up to a mid xxxxx in the future. Maybe even more if lucky.

Sexshop dot com just sold for 226K. Almost twenty times more!

It's a top name - I think $12k was pretty cheap. Easy resale for $20k for the buyer.

If you're in for sports related domains then I caught soccermegastore.com a few days back - 2 word .com, big potential in a rapidly growing US market.

No good over here as we call it football ;)

That domain is easily worth over $100K.

Update: Repairtech.com ended up selling for $4,500, $4145 above listed BIN price prior to expiring.

That why you have to include that info on your sales page and or email.

@jamaltq let say you won that domain..what would have been your plans with it?

I actually just started doing this, I have a name dealing with back child support, so I just added message that just a few typein visits would pay for a lifetime of visitors to this name.

Please explain why you state that is a better name..
Unless you are just spamming your site.
