I've been bombarded with phone calls day in and day out regarding each domain name I register.
It's always someone with an Indian Accent(no offense Intended-just my experience).

It's usually about them trying to sell me seo services, web development etc... and even when I say no, no,no no thank you, no no,, stop calling... they keep calling.

It seems to be the same thing happening via email...

Am I the only one experiencing this?

I know India is taking off now into the domain space and has always been into tech. I have had people from that region do good work for me before. But with that being said.. if you read this and know anyone doing this.. please you gotta know how to act.. Put some integrity in your business.

I'm not sure of the right way to look at this, but i guess I'm just annoyed. Maybe I should change my whois number to 911 or 411 or to a sex hotline. I may just do the last idea(maybe for a week).

I am also one who is suffering with it...,
& i use an android application to block sms & calls as i dont use that phone much & keeps it on silent almost time, & as aditya agrawal said you can use another number & change your whois data,
& you can make one new email id & use it only for domain registrations so you can get out of this bombardings...,
Hope this would help you to get some peace...:)

lol, I've been using Godaddy since i stated domaining so I'm not familiar with free privacy. I assumed it's a fee everywhere. What registrars give free privacy with each domain you reg?
As per my experience,
Namecheap, Namesilo, & Name.com are offering free privacy...
Unfortunately i can not use this registrars for all domains as i need to sell some on godaddy & namejet. But these are the good options i think...

I am getting half a dozen calls a day at present and 100 new emails blocked each day.

For Indians: DND. To avoid unwanted telemarketing calls or SMS, Do Not Disturb is facility given by all telecom companies in India. It is mandatory and if you still get any calls it is punishable offence in India. :)

Rest of the world: Remove one digit from your phone number. It is possible and in Whois you will see 9 digit number. No calls. No SMS. That is what I did. :)

Thank You.

1) Setup a free number using your Google account (under Google Voice) and use that in your WhoIs
2) As mentioned above, remove 1 digit from your phone number
3) Use NameSilo, Uniregistry or Internet.bs who all offer free whois privacy

I hate these emails and phone calls as well, but have gone with #1 on many domains so at least calls aren't going to my phone anymore. Personally, I think part of what has caused the growth in this spam is because many people on different black hat forums tout this as a money making opportunity. Whether it be though email or phone, posts have been created giving newbies (or anyone) simple instructions with pre-made email/phone templates and other stuff.

Can understand your pain as these scumbags don't leave fellow citizens even! I am from India and receive a call almost every half an hour from them, sometimes repeatedly from the same company after a few days I say I am a developer myself and don't need their service.
Am applying the same idea.
Still they call me for every domain I register.

Funny part is , they are selling Whois database to me when I said am also web developer.
For 2000Rs per month, they will give me 3000 new domain registration contacts every day.

I considering using second mobile number for first 2 weeks, then change it back to regular number.
In most cases whois database fetches within a week time.

I don't know if it's just me but today has been unbelievable with the level of email spam i've been getting from India. I have literally lost count with the volume today but must be 10+ emails already today. It is beyond irritating!

Is it just me getting these emails at volume today and also can I block these idiots emailing me (e.g. blocking india as a location in gmail?)

Nope. I am in the same boat. Today was field day for them

I'm actually quite abusive to those cold callers, and I use lots of 4 letter words ( and I don't mean love). I discuss their parentage, previous profession and other topics. I no longer get any calls like that, so there must be a leave alone list somewhere.

So i'm not alone I guess that's a relief of sorts lol.

One or two a day is one thing but when it's 10+ like today it's very frustrating.

Even if the telecallers generate strong MIS the female HR staff of call centers cutt-off the sales and steal the money from orders. Then they say to the boys employed as telecaller that they have not made sales and will not get salary.
I have seen this in SIM card company and bathroom fittings sales BPO, even the BPO has to shift their entire office after few months because female HR has hired and fired too much employees and they now want there money which was spend on travel to office and now not getting salary after 2-4 months.
This is realty on BPO industry in India.

it seems a relatively new boom
maybe after a while, people will find ways to make money off these spam calls.
some call forwarding or whatever else.
after a while, someone always finds a way to hack the hacker.

For a long time, I'm using a "virtual" phone number from a specifically selected somewhat exotic country in whois. Almost no calls so far :) And it is answering machine anyway

Afaik some UK-based VoIP providers do offer revenue share for incoming calls to "premium rate" numbers like +44.87x or +44.9xx and those numbers ARE reachable internationally. Might be a good idea to let these spammers call UK, receive some long greeting, "press 1 to speak to CEO office", more music, "please wait" etc. Would be a positive revenue stream :)

The problem is that with some registrars (like NameSilo) it is impossible to set different countries for address and country phone code (which they think is always registrants country, so the country phone prefix is pre-filled). I contacted namesilo about it, but they explicitly refused to change this scheme. Even though there is no ICANN requirement for a whois phone number and registrant to be located in the same country...

My only published # is an 800 number that allows me to blacklist any number. For emails I blacklist the entire domain of anyone sending me unsolicited offers, that includes anyone trying to sell domains. I encourage you to do the same.

Those trying to sell domains look more whirred.
Why on earth will someone see a domain I have listed for sale and will be trying to propose another to me?

I've literally stopped answering any numbers that aren't already saved in my phone because of them, I notice they never seem to leave a voicemail either. Its truly sad how desperate they have become.
Glad they don't leave a voicemail..mine would be full in a few hours.

I too get these annoying spam calls all the time. It peaked last Friday as I got 10+ calls in the space of an hour. I don't answer them and block the numbers here and there but not sure if that helps. I noticed on Friday I rejected the calls a couple of times only to get another call from another number so I am assuming it was the same guy/girl. This is borderline harassment and is just getting worse and worse.

I know your probably thinking get privacy, but that has it's disadvantages too as well as extra costs.

I read somewhere on the web that obtaining whois data to cold call is against icann/verisign rules and something seriously needs to be done before it gets out of hand.

And the next issue I have is, if these web design/development people/places in India are legit, you would think they would use proper email ID address as well as sending out a professional email rather than just plain crap!

This is all similar to getting junk mail at your personal home address to tell you to sell/auction your home from real estate agencies or getting junk mail to sell your car. It's your thing. What ever it is. It should be your choice what you want to do with it, when you want to do it.

I answered a call a few weeks ago and said I am not interested in any web services, and the guy got all pushy in selling, and it got to the stage that I said it's non of your business what I do with the domain, where his reply was, "but sir, it is my business"... this type of thing just pisses one off. What do you do or say... just waste of everyone's time.

Anyway I have this feeling that people in India don't have any respect for people out there in the world and it basically shows ultimately how they think of doing business. And I am not being racist as I am Indian

Sorry to hear about that.. I have gotten less calls from the time i posted this. I have graduated to irs scams etc.

But read through the comments and you'll find some good suggestions to help.. such as adding your number to the do no call registry..

Calling names and arguing with the telecallers won't lead to anything because most of these callers are not calling for their own good. They are pressurized by big BPOs/ call centres to make a hundred calls everyday to sell services of companies from every other country in the world. Fail that and lose your salary / job. Though it will continue because they will find someone else to do it.
This should not be considered a problem with a specific country. I've got calls like these from Germany, Australia and other countries in the past.

Best remedy is to take some steps yourself for your own protection. This thread consists of a lot of ideas for that. (y)

I wish it was as simple as this.

I use a gmail account and a ton of emails go both into spam and some also arrive in my inbox.
Maybe i'm just lucky lol but these scumbags seem to be able to get hold of me come what may.

I've received so much spam today it's been beyond irritating.

IMHO. Google is excellent at filtering our this spam, as long as you train it, it gets even better than excellent. I see only a handful of new versions of this spam, but once trained, Google takes care of most of my spam. My Google Spam Folder far outweighs the rest of the content put together. I maybe go thru it once every one or two weeks. But I rarely ever see anything incorrectly allocated as spam. And if I do and allocate it to another folder. Google remembers that for next time. Almost Perfect :)

How to Train Your Google? :)

It's automatic. Google remembers everything you adjust in your email folder. Classifying emails as spam. Unclassifying emails as spam. Putting specific emails into specific folders. It's almost effortless. Since you are doing this anyway.

I have had my cell number on the do not call registry for years and it has been no solution. I am getting so many calls from India and from machines that I have decided to port my cell number over to Google voice and get a new number for my cell phone that I will never list anywhere except on business cards. I will only list my Google voice number from now on. This way I can just check the voicemails left on that number.
