advice Who is your target - End User? Domainers? Stop buying garbage

Spaceship Spaceship
Watch
I will be the first to admit that I have bought some really bad names in the past - really bad. I will not renew them and many have fallen off.

Who is your target? Stop buying garbage and start putting your money into something that will sell. I get lists of names daily from people wanting me to buy their junk and I don't think they realize its junk.

How do you know if your name is garbage:
  • Would you buy it?
  • Who is the end user?
  • What will an end user do with the name?
If you cant answer those questions you have garbage - here is my latest list from a user:
BestBuyout.com
BlacksGifts.com
FashionAreas.com
HairFail.com
InsuranceDebts.com
InsuranceEstate.com
MorePins.com
ReviewMotors.com
ShopYart.com

Just because 2 names have a meaning alone doesn't mean it has a real value slapped together.

Who is the end user for these names? What domainer would buy these names?

Just my opinion - think about who is going to buy what you are regsitering

I am an investor, I do and own businesses in different industries.

We all invest on names and brands right?

It is not about luck, it is about marketing. Right time right person right pricing.
I know what you're saying, I have offline business as well. Exactly because you own other businesses you should know that one big hit will not make you a great business man, you should replicate this day by day, for years and than start teaching others. I can give you a lot of real life examples where peoples had a very good year, made lot's of money and next year lost everything because they could not replicate. If you own businesses in other industries will not make you strait away a successful investor in domains or other industries. When you don't know for yourself what to do with your names you can't teach people the next day what to do with their just because you won the lottery.

Part of what are you saying it's true, but not all. For example ',Makkeup' ( extra letter) I sold it over 500 times than what I paid for in less than 5 months. Monitoringg( extra letter) I have received an offer on flippa 400 times than what I have paid for in less than 7 hours after acquiring it. It's nothing bad if you can replicate that over and over. It's like saying that if you sell expensive cars for double the money it's a good business but if you sell 1$ items which you have paid 10c it's not a good business ( what 1$ shops are making)
So adding extra letters to a dictionary name makes you money? That's interesting, I usually skip those. You can always learn new tricks.

How can you give somebody an advice if I don't know yourself how it's done. It's like teaching somebody how to swim, staying on the shore because you can't swim. It's not about bad times, it's about winning a lottery ticket and that acting like your the top business man. When you are trying to sell a name loosing money and after 1 months you get lucky and sell it for much more, this is not knowledge, it's just luck. You are asking 1 month before, exactly the same peoples to whom you want to give them an advice today, how you should sale your names an to who, and after 1 month your acting like you know everything now.

My friend let me tell you another secret. Sometimes I post things here just to post and see what is out there and keep my name going. Do you really think I am selling names for less than what I paid?
Sometimes I will ask a question and I already know the answer, its staying in the public eye, being relevant ,making connections.
Sometimes I will say "Buy X name, I am losing money on this deal. Do you really think I'm losing money?
Its about sales - its about creating a buzz , an illusion. Seriously, I think some of the people here have no clue what sales is about.

I don't target anyone in particular, I get offers and ignore them as most domains I have are for projects I would like to develop.(y)

Heh, okay.. but you have got to change your avatar pix accordingly. The current one doesn't fit the controversial persona you're striving for! :xf.wink:

I think you're missing the whole point here. I read this thread more like a subtle warning, by example, to all those sending @uglydork unsolicited garbage. Plus his trying to promote himself and his business, that, too, of course.

As for @uglydork's arrogance, well, that comes with the territory... making an $150,000 sale and getting interviewed will do that to you.:xf.cool:
OMG - someone who gets it! Thank you.
I'm not really arrogant, I am just telling the truth and not pussy footing around.
I am 52 years old and I don't give a crap what anyone thinks of me - seriously. I am who I am, this is no show I am putting on.
Do you think anyone on this board cares if I dropped off the face of the earth tomorrow? Its all about you and your family - go make money and stop whining, I am really trying to help people here

Stop making this about me. I am trying to help people - that's it.

There are exceptions, but typically I buy or hand-reg with end user in mind. Even if I'm buying something to resell to another domainer, I try to visualize it as a real site/business. Of about half my regs, I'm the end user since I develop them or plan to. :)

You were selling your top names for 12k and I know you paid for one 4k and for others in the xxxx range, so it's very probable you were loosing money. If you say that they were just testing and you didn't had any intention of selling even if they were in the sale section, than this is even worse. I'm not talking about business ethics, when in the same time you have thread selling your top names for 12k, because you need the money, but in the same time you open a thread that you are buying names 10k-20k, without having any intention of buying, this is just misleading people and this should be checked by admin's.

I get what you are saying, but before you make another post it is my honest advice that you need to get better at PR or hire someone that can help you.
If everyone would like to turn this into a thread of why I hate uglydork lets do it! I thrive on controversy, you are only pumping my brand more and more. No press is bad press, my business continues to grow.

And yes, this is common sense, if somebody is talking to you in private you should not replicate without his consent, you are part of a community and you should act accordingly.

It's true - tact is important in all professions.

If a patient comes to me for advice/healing and they share that they are eating GMO, candy bars, drinking diet soda, microwave most of their food, eat at McDonalds 4x a week and they smoke a pack of cigarettes per day and they wonder why they are diabetic and sick - I don't publicly flog them as an example....Sure I can share their example anonymously and their identification is shielded, but anyone can lookup the whois of a domain.

Look to your right - 2 of the most popular threads are mine - it was 3 yesterday and this one is headed in that direction as well. I know exactly what I'm doing :)

Having in mind that he's and ex service desk manager, who should be a diplomat and communicator, he should be able to build relationships, should be emphatic...I think that he was just someone with technical skills but no people management or relationship management skills, or no understanding or interest in the wider business context and outcomes....I think I understand now why he is an ex it service desk manager.

Come on man. If your thread is popular than it doesn't mean it's good for your business. You think controversy will create cash for you? Please explain how.

Sure you can give good advice, you gave a very good advice to newbies in the first post of this thread, one can argue if you or anyone else is giving bad advice's though. At the end of the day, everybody knows that it's not right to share someone else's domain names like that. You can share your bad purchases if you want to.

  • Would you buy it?
  • Who is the end user?
  • What will an end user do with the name?
Simple enough advice, but how many people actually follow it?

When giving advice you should probably say "imo". Nothing wrong with opinions everybody has one experts and noobs alike.

As for your sale, I will wager majority of those that have been in the industry for 20 years will agree the buyer got a good deal. The flippers don't get the true value of generic domain names and probably don't realize they are in limited supply.

Very probably you were loosing, seeing what names you were selling...and even if you weren't loosing, you weren't making to much profit.
If in the same day you are struggling to sell your best names for 12k because you said you need urgently money, but after 1 minute you say that you are buying names in the 10-20k, than at least of them is false and just trying to trick people.
Trick people? I was selling some names and also buying - I think most of us do that all day?
Really - let it out - what are you REALLY mad about?
