I believe only short and easy-to-remember domain names are sustainable, regardless of where in the world you live and which cultural background you come from.

Now that the Chinese domain market has become a hot topic, I myself want to understand this trend too. Is there any real meaning behind each domain name sold in China? Here, I'd like to share with you what I've found as I read the Chinese news everyday.

GZX.com
GZX can stand for 更自信 (even more self-confident) which can be used in many fields such as education, self-help, and even consumer products to raise your self image.

XLY.com
XLY can stand for 夏令营 (summer camp) or 新领域 (new field) which can be used in recreation and high-tech products.

At the Domain Pulse conference held last month, there was a Chinese domain market panel discussion attended by the following experts:

Philipp Grabensee, Co-Founder & Deputy Chairman at Afilias
Giuseppe Giovanni Graziano, CEO GRGG.com Brokerage & Consulting
Matthias Meyer-Schönherr, Sedo.com
Ray Zheng, Shanghai Racent Internet Group

I also contributed by doing a video talk, giving my long term view on the Chinese domain market.

Kassey both you and Giuseppe do something that is very unusual in the domain world-you both return emails. That's why EVERYONE should read both your newsletters. Thank you for this post.

.com safe from takeover by .brand in China

When the idea of .brand was announced, I was concerned that it would dethrone .com as the best choice for corporations in China, therefore greatly reducing the values of .com domain names. As it turned out, such fear is really not necessary. Just look at the following table of .brand extensions released in China so far. It is obvious that their performance is simply unattractive...

Thank you for taking the time to provide this insight.
I found an app called mo-chat from Japan.
Maybe this lead is somehow related to that.
Thanks again!

MoChat most likely stands for Mobile Chat, a chat app for business users in Japan. Mo (も) in Japanese may refer to many characters such as 模 (touch). How about a chat site that enables you to "touch" the other person virtually?

"The word “moe” (in Japanese: “萌え”; pronounced as “moh-ay”) is a slang word rooted deep in the Japanese Otaku culture. It has often been used to mean a particular type of “adorable” or “cute” towards fictional characters, people, animals, etc." source: http://nic.moe/en/

Can anyone provide guidance on how to price this one?
I quoted 12k and provided comp sales to justify, then dropped the price 50% in response to the first rejection, only to be met with another rejection claiming the price was too high. The buyer has not suggested a counter offer yet.

Now that I have more info on the domains potential list of endusers, I think my initial pricing was on the low side. Any thoughts?

The domain is in redemption and Im planning to renew it later today and broaden my lead list and start over.

Just wait for them to get back to you. Or else ask them to give a specific offer amount.

By rejecting your price once they got you to drop your asking price by half. Maybe they will wait just to see if you drop it some more.

If they rejected your second offer, tell them after consideration your price is back to 12k. What do you have to lose? If they really have an offer, they will tell you. Maybe they only want to pay $50 or $100. You have to know what you really want when you get into negotiation, and be willing to walk away if they can't come close.

Dropping from 12k to 6k showed weakness in your negotiation.

I agree with everything you just said.
Im not a strong negotiator when Im anxious to raise short term cash.
I told them I took it off the market after further valuation review etc.

Which is true actually.

Most domain pros seem to be in this game to flip sell domain assets, and I respect that, for them.

My digital asset portfolio is being accumulated to keep long term ( forever )

Sometimes, I see an inquiry and potential x,xxx quick sale as additional funds to reinvest in portfolio expansion, and I blow the negotiation by showing my cards.

I have never actually performed any outbound lead gen, because I don't want any of my assets to ever be "outbound" lol

I picked up a few new local ppc clients yesterday, and lost my hasty motivation to sell at that price.

Thanks for your points of view!!

J

Go back to them via email and tell them after more research your price will remain at $12k the original price and that your counter offer is now null and void-then don't even respond to an email from them unless they offer full price and then just be patient. Good luck.

Thanks! You guys are very helpful. Ill update the negotiation with that advice and update here if anything develops.

A use case demonstrating potential of 4C .com domain names

Meaningful 4C .com domain names have great potential in corporate China. This is particularly true to startups which generally lack fund to invest in expensive domain names. 4C .com names are attractive because: (1) .com is the most preferred extension in China; (2) 4C is still very short in length; (3) They are still cheap to acquire, and some names can even be hand registered. What's needed is a creative mind to think and turn a 4C domain name into a brand...

Interesting to read. Thanks Kassey - it's also reassuring to read since I just bought 88ZZ and 88GT :)

I continually receive inquiries from Chinese domainers (I assume) interested in my name zmby(.com); however, the offers are usually around $1000 or less.
For those with first-hand experience of the Chinese market, would you recommend putting it up for auction on a Chinese auction site and what do you think it would sell for?
